Gravatar Bias and incompetence at Reuters is no secret. It is all too common. Remember the doctored photos. (There I go acting like they haven't reported anything since then... ;) )

Gravatar The report states that Latin can be used only with permission of the bishop.

Isn't it the rule that the Mass can be said in Latin without such permission, so long as the form of the Mass is the Novus Ordo?

What requires permission, I thought, was the Tridentine form.

Gravatar They definitely have it out for the Pope. Should have known they'd mention Regensburg...wouldn't be suprised if they do so in every article regarding the Pope.

How is praying for conversion "anti-Semitic" ? I believe this is what's being mumbled about. Like they don't pray for our conversion ?

Gravatar Ha ha ha! Good laugh. (Although it is scary with what little information people are allowed to write the news.) Yes, Andrew, you are right: there is a large difference between "Latin Mass" (which, when referring to the Novus Ordo, is the right of any priest to say, so long as it does not cause pastoral issues) and "Tridentine Mass," which is what is at stake.

Gravatar Traditionalists can now say mass in Latin only with prior permission from a bishop, and the liturgy is heard only rarely.

I'm not even sure to begin with the factual errors of this one sentence. First of all, as brassband notes, a Mass can be said in Latin anytime. It is the Tridentine that requires special permission.

Then again, maybe the reporter means that only "traditionalists" require permission to say the Mass in Latin; everyone else can do it anytime.

Gravatar We can all relax until the document itself is available for US to read... Reuters and the rest all have their wishful thinking caps on... i.e. at least what passes for thinking in their quarters.

All the best,
D. Ox

p.s. we should swap links!

Gravatar Let's see.

"motu propio": talk about lousy spelling.

"However, there are concerns that a revival of the Latin words could undo the effect of the 1960s reforms in removing sources of strain between Catholics and Jews."

Translation: Vatican II is our god.

"The Council sought to eliminate prejudices blaming Jews for the death of Jesus by highlighting Christianity's ancient Jewish roots and affirming God's love for other faiths."

Translation: The Church taught anti-semitic doctrines.

"Church sources deny that a return of Latin liturgies would invalidate these reforms, though it is not yet clear whether the prayers in question, used in Good Friday services, would be retained or amended."

oh boy. Guess the Pravda, err Reuters doesn't really know much about the liturgy does it?

"Pope Benedict stirred inter-faith tensions with the Muslim world last year by making a speech in Germany including a medieval quote about Islam being spread by violence."

Translation: "We hate you Benedict XVI"

Gravatar The reason Reuters is calling the Latin Mass anti-semitic is because they have the Devil as their father. The Devil never sleeps.

Gravatar Yet most of you probably still buy these anti-Catholic rags. Do what I did, cancel them. And tell them why. Purchasing them only encourages them to continue what they do badly. From politics to religion most of them are beyond worthless (unless you need liners for your pets' cages). Tom

Gravatar Reueters has its motu propio moments. St Bloog's has its Mahoney moments. Seems like it all balances out in the end.

Gravatar The British press coverage has been simply awful, lots of articles, even in respectable 'papers claiming the 1962 rite is anti-Semitic.

Gravatar How is praying for conversion "anti-Semitic" ? I believe this is what's being mumbled about. Like they don't pray for our conversion ?

No, they don't. Judaism isn't a religion that generally seeks proselytes. Or did you not mean Jews by "they"?

And if you don't comprehend how some people would find this passage disturbing in the historical context of the Catholic Church, then I really don't know what could make you understand.
