Remember, these are the same folks who thought that the most important sentence in the Regensburg Lecture was the one where Il Papa quoted an aggrieved Byzantine emperor. They actually think that the "Vatican Rottweiler" exists, the poor benighted fools ...

Well, would this accurately sum up Benedict's state of mind?

Why shouldn't Benedict "lash out"? Italy is showing that it's just one more victim of secularism and multiculturalism. I'd worry if he didn't lash out. And the MSM never misses an opportunity to cast Benedict as a cantankerous, behind the times old codger who wants to restrict "human freedom."

Freedom.
A master painter is free to create a work of art that brings tears to the eye.
A master martial artist can move in ways that seem to defy gravity.
A skilled poet can write lines that stir our hearts and describe our inmost fears and desires centuries after he has died.
The freedom of excellence.
The freedom of greatness.
The freedom these politicians offer is a sad, pale thing.
The "freedom" of the lowest common denominator.

I remember waking up one morning many years ago to hear of the death of a major Australian political and legal figure. Being of a pious disposition, as was my wont I offered up a quick prayer for his soul. Then over the airwaves came the voice of one of Australia's leading historians, a notorious atheist, praising the deceased for his work in, inter alia, introducing the quickie divorce laws, and 'breaking the power of God over Australia'. A short time after that the historian died. I saw a pious colleague at work that day and confessed that I had broken with my usual habit and, on hearing of the historian's death, had not offered up a quick prayer for his soul. My friend responded to the effect that he had a similar habit, and that he had also broken with it in this case. There's something about breaking the power of God or breaking with the moral domination of the Church that tests my imperfect charity to breaking point, and it would seem that I am not alone.
