Considering I don't own a car or take trips frequently I don't think it would be too expensive either.

It looks like an almost perfect marketing campaign for planktos. The vatican doesn't have much in the way of emissions at all, considering there are no major roads, etc. so it's cheap. It also has a significant amount of clout ethically, so it gives legitimacy to their slightly oddish business.

Planktos PR ploy. When I first saw the headline, I questioned the Jesuits reputation for critical thought, so many things wrong with calling mid-latitude tree planting carbon sequestration e.g. how do you guarantee the wood will never rot or burn and re-release the CO2?

Turns out the Holy See accepted Planktos' offered donation, no commercial transaction, maybe some support for the stock.
