I hope I'm not breaking one of my own rules here (namely, don't criticize someone for doing the right thing), but the stupidity of a CATHOLIC university offering an endowed chair in CATHOLIC theology to someone like RRR is so palpable, that reversing the decision -- while obviously the right thing to do -- hardly warrants kudos to USD. Whoever was behind this clueless offer need a serious talking-to. Any bets that will happen?
According to an article published last week at California Catholic Daily, some of the 2000+ signatures on the re-inviation petition appeared to be duplicates. The article didn't say how many - but does it come as any surprise?
My guess for the disinvitation? It came down to money - outraged alumni and tuition-paying parents threatened to cut off or reduce donations. I hope the administration made this decision for the right reason, but unfortunately these things sometimes come down to $$$.

We see similar things when colleges are enthusiastic about getting rid of their American Indian mascots until the alumni stop sending in their wampum.
What next? Georgetown naming a human rights chair after a pro abortion priest who served in congress, defying superiors until the Pope stepped in?

The Newman Society has a guide to Catholic Colleges. There's some 250 or so colleges and universities in the US claiming to be Catholic. The Newman Society identified only 20 US colleges (and 1 from Canada) as authentically Catholic. U. of Sandy Eggo was not one of them. A must-have for any college decision these days. I mean, at some point, we have to say, "Gee, why bother with the other 230?"
