I see the Msgr. Georg Ratzinger made the event - is he living in Rome these days?
I know nepotism is bad, but I still think the Holy Father should name his older brother a Cardinal, just for fun.

I had the kind of experience in eight years of Catholic school that has driven many people out of the Church. Two things kept me in, I think: a hyper-rational approach to the Faith at home--one that left me aware of the solid, factual, historical reasons to be a Catholic, such that I could never live with myself had I left--and music, the one beautiful experience I had at school. The music was not exceptional for the fifties and early sixties, but it wasn't the later folk-pop-rock trash, either.

Those genres are not inherently evil (hard rock, maybe), and they aren't trash if they are well-made and wholesome, Fr. Joe.

The music of the late 50s and early 60s doesn't hold a candle to the music of the late 60s and early 70s. Hendrix, Dylan, the Stones, the Beatles when they were actually interesting, The Doors, Creedence Clearwater, Buffalo Springfield and I'm omitting a ton of other musicians from the period. With the exceptions of U2 and Springsteen, it wasn't until the early 90s that music that good came around again.

Georg would strangle his brother if he made him a cardinal. Seriously.
Now, if he named him Capellmeister Emeritus of the Sistine Chapel, that might work. But honestly, a guy who did choir direction at the top of his game with a top choir... I don't think he'd want to work when he's too tired and sensory-impaired to do a lot of what he'd want to do.

The "trash" I was referring to was folk/rock/pop in church.

I don't mind folk groups of acoustic guitars accompanied by a piano performing in church so long as they're performing appropriate songs. I don't believe I've heard rock or pop music in church, and if I did, I wouldn't be pleased. At my home parish, which is hardly a bastion of liberalism, the choir director would implement drums into the music, and it drove me nuts. Percussion just doesn't belong in a service, in my mind.
