Is this issue really religious, or is it political too? Britain is as much the enemy in that region as the US.

I think the law itself is to blame here, rather than the interests that can abuse the law. This case reminds me of a similar one here in the UK, where a protestor was charged with inciting racial abuse cos she trailed a US flag on the ground outside of the Menwith Hill military base:

I never found out whether Ms Percy was found guilty in the end, but it's pretty much the same as what's happening in the Sudan so, sadly, our own government can hardly claim the moral high ground.

Dear Grim,
I haven't heard of the British government threatening a 54 year old woman with 40 lashes, have you? I would say an outraged world can claim the higher ground here. Of course, it has to be a choice how we conduct ourselves.

I blogged the same sentiments AmP. And what's even more outrageous are the spontaneous, yes spontaneous, mobs that have gathered that are calling for her death! I find it all rather incredulous at the very least.

Well, of course, the 40 lashes is obscene (altho you'll note they dared not pass that sentence) ... but then so is the death penalty and, again, in britain we have laws that allow the use of violent 'distraction techniques', albeit on children in custody rather than 50 yr old ladies.
As for the 'outraged world', the sudanese themselves seem pretty outraged what with the whole 'thousands marching in the street'. They're probably doing that because they don't have the internet connections to express their outrage via blogs like we do.
