I have to say, the pill thing has always struck me as bizarre. To be fair, I haven't researched it very thoroughly.

Still, the connection of "healing" to "baby Jesus made Mary stay intact" is pretty clear. And if God can command St. John to eat a whole big scroll in the Book of Revelation, swallowing a rolled-up piece of rice paper with a prayer on it isn't too odd -- not to mention that we eat the Word of God every time we take Communion.
