I wonder if the apology might have been suggested by the pope. A few weeks before the head of Canada's bishops conference met with the pope. He said they discussed the situation with Canada's aboriginal peoples. Those people were the victims of major scandal involving sexual abuse of children at residential schools. I don't know but it is at least possible that hearing that caused him to suggest an apology to Cardinal Ouellet.

These things tend to be scheduled weeks or months in advance, so I'm not reading much into it. In any case, let me say, as I've said before, that apologizing for someone else's mistakes or crimes is not very difficult.

I have a feeling it has to do with whether or not the Pope will be coming to the Eucharistic Congress in 2008.
