Gravatar Lightning or not, he should not GO to Communion nor should he be GIVEN Holy Communion based on his record and open support for legalized abortion. He made a tongue-in-cheek quip about being a product of parochial school. Too bad he did not LEARN the Natural Moral Law doctrine at the time.

Gravatar Amen and Amen!

Gravatar Mayor Giuliani's position on abortion really has no bearing on his coming to communion. As a thrice divorced man whose current marriage is "irregular" and not recognized by the Church, he is barred from communion.

The lightening incident was pretty funny, actually! Thanks for pointing it out, Thomas.

Gravatar Angel: Nice shot, Lord, you hit Rudy's building!

Lord: Whaddaya mean "nice shot"? I wasn't aiming for the building, you created being. I was aiming for...oh, never mind.

Gravatar Classic!

Gravatar Lightening is a natural phenomenon. The Lord with deal with Mr. Guilliani in other ways. He can take St. Teresa of Avila's old room under the staircase in Hell.

Gravatar I hate (sort of) to wade back into this, but . . .

As I heard Rudy last night he stated an opinion; he is "personally opposed" etc., but does not believe that the law can prohibit others who do not hold the same view from having abortions.

Assume that this is the limit of his involvement in abortion . . . he's not taking any affirmative steps to promote abortion or make it more available; he's not directly assisting anyone in obtaining one. True, he's not taking any steps to prohibit or prevent abortions . . . but he's simply stating his opinion about what the law can do in our system.

Would that be a basis for excommunication?

Gravatar He makes the distinction between law in terms of the Constitution and Religion, but he is a relativist both in terms of morality and because he will say whatever is relative to getting him elected.

Gravatar Once again, let's point out the difference between "refusing someone communion" and "excommunication". Two different things, people! :)

Rudy's done lots of things to merit being refused communion: creating scandal by his irregular marriages and irregular lifestyle (all those girlfriends) is the most obvious one. Publicly saying that he personally opposes homicide but doesn't think the government should is pretty scandalous, also.

The latae sententiae excommunication thing would depend on how deep his involvement in "procurement" is. Giving tons of money to Planned Parenthood -- is that enough? Did he do stuff in his public positions to get more abortions, or to create more abortion availability? That sort of determination is above my paygrade, but I imagine that's the kind of stuff canon law would look for. But you'd really have to go to one of the canon law blogs for that analysis.

Gravatar I think that the next time Rudy "consults" religion, he should not reject the correction of a particularly shiny apostle...The timing of that lightning sure struck me! That was a great moment!
