This was the only safe video they could show.
You certainly were not going to get a highlight reel from the L..A. Religious Conference for the Holy Father.

That's pathetic. Simply, and unmitigatedly, pathetic. Corny music, reverse footage and speedy footage (two staples of high school media class there, folks), jarring zooms, and all those animals waving "hi". Ugh.

Where's the ass? Oh, never mind.

Nice narrow and quick pictures of Of Our Lady of the Angels architectural atrocity. In my dreams, the Holy Father gives a Reagan speech: "Cardinal Mahoney. Tear down this church!"

You guys have no idea. I live in LA. It's so much worse than you can even imagine. Count your lucky stars if you live in a diocese that takes Catholicism seriously. There are so many parishes here that refer to their churches as communities. I know a handful of people who are in pre-cana programs at these "communities" and the couples live together! They use birth control! No one in the programs seem to mind. In fact, it's probably condoned. Sigh.

John V-- that's funny!
Maybe the video shows animals because there's not enough people in L.A. that could be recognized as Catholics.
How long until the Cardinal retires? Is he 80 yet?
(related: hmmm... we're producing a video for the pope... our Archdiocese is located in the movie-making capital of the world... let's do a crappy video instead!)

Specifically, as a former pug breeder and still pug fan, I intend to file suit against the Cardinal for what he did to those pugs.
Generally, I would say all the animals were harmed during the making of this video, so I've forwarded the clip to PETA.
Seriously, however, I guess this is the best they can do. We have to pray, not because we're inclined to think we're superior to Los Angeles, but because these are our brothers and sisters, slipping away into the ether.

lol - that is pretty funny other than the fact that it will ACTUALLY be shown.
I will say it is cool they have a day to bless their animals - in my Church we have an entire weekend with waterfights (I prefer the bucket or water balloon as opposed to the conventional supersoaker) , fireworks, and baskets filled with painted eggs and ham. It's called Pascha - but we will have been in Church Wednesday night, Thursday night, Friday afternoon, Friday night, Saturday afternoon, Saturday night, Sunday morning, Sunday night, Monday morning with services lasting approx 3 hrs - so we get some slack perhaps...
The timing and purpose of the video is of course atrocious.

WOW...I really thought it would just be a bit corny or something...that truly is absolutely pathetic. No mention of ANYTHING pertinent to the visit, the Archdiocese's history...they didn't even bother to explain that the footage we are seeing is one of those "animal blessings"...that really was useless. I guarantee that was a "shoot, we need to produce a welcome video...hurry Bob, run down to that animal blessing an get some footage." Even then a good editor could have done SOMETHING better than that.
YIKES!

I agree with WhollyRoamin. How is it that LA Archdiocese whose area includes the city where movie making was birthed and perfected made the single most crappy video welcome?
Talk about insolence.
PS the AD of LA has a media contact. Anyone brave enough to write and ask why they have such lame art? We don't even have to get into the theology and content. It's just horridly made.

A sadly campy TV spot. Reminded me a bit of the ones made for the CTTC to promote California tourism (maybe that was the idea?), as silly but not as well done.
Then again, it *was* posted on April 1. Any chance it was a prank?

Oh my Dear Lord, that video was horrible, personally I enjoyed the man dressed up as a bunny holding a bunny. I guess nothing else happens expect for the blessing of animals. The video looked like my 6 year old niece thought of the topic and as if she put it together. I can't believe the Communications office put that out.

Plus, I should think that they have more important things on their hands than making a pretty video.

Isn't the traditional time for the Blessing of the Animals back in October (St. Francis?)?? Did they just use old footage and clip together people saying one or two words instead of a full Welcome to Los Angeles, Pope Benedict?

no, I suppose for those saying it's merely laughable and the media folks have better things to do...ok. But THIS is what they present to the leader of our Church? Whatever they were thinking, it portrays a sense that they feel that schlock is good enough for the Pope.
PS The Media department were I work (FUS) would never put out such garbage, no matter what it was for. Aren't we above such mediocrity?

The mood prior to the Pope's visit to the US seems to be very positive and upbeat on the whole.
But, if my memory serve me right, this is the first visit to the US by a Pope since the sex abuse scandals broke out a few years ago? When things got really bad, Pope John Paul was too ill to really, personally address it, though I do remember he said something at World Youth Day in Toronto 2002.
Even if my memory serves me wrong, I have the feeling that some folk bear grudges against the Church and are quietly preparing to make their voices heard during this visit.
Pope Ben does seem to "stir things up", more than Pope John Paul. Let us pray, and be prepared.

Whuddya mean? The video is great! Guess you've not read any of this pope's writings on creation (especially, animals) and the environment. Many call him the "Green Pope." He approved "Joseph and Chico" didn't he? Get with it. Get with the pope.
