Gravatar What amazes me is the inability of those in favor of contraception to think outside their own box of presumptions about how wonderful the Pill is for women, for marriages, and for the culture at large.

HV is a VERY short encyclical and Paul VI listed some pretty heavy claims about what artificial contraception would lead to - and all have come to pass. Of course, proponents of the Pill would now claim "well so what, we like those new 'developments too" but that misses the point that AT THE TIME, he was pooh poohed by these same *albeit younger, hipper people as being out of touch and fear mongering.

But here's another angle perhaps. Those in favor of the Church doing a 180 on Contraception offer a 'trump' argument from practicality: since so many Catholics are contraceptiing, their reasoning goes, it'd be better for the Church to change it's tune.

The question is of course: is this the new principle of moral teaching? Any overwhelming majority gets it's way for good? Or only until such time as it loses the majority?

One doesn't need to ponder very long before seeing how this new principle could wreak havoc across the board. Of course, those who "want what they want" don't care about long term consequences so long as they get what they want. Sad, but I think it's probably true that those who proudly contracept are least equiped with human maturity to lecture the rest of us on what the "Church oughta teach".

Gravatar Thanks for making this available. It is nice to hear a reasoned debate without the rancor that is present in so much HV discussion.

Gravatar I miss real debates.

Gravatar Ditto. Thanks for making this available! In reply to the first comment, a priest is a priest forever, but I feel it's more appropriate to call him Charlie considering the gross scandal he's given for over 40 years.
