"It's really not in his tradition to attend parties," explained Mr. Melady
Hmm...then why have I seen quite a few picks of Card. Ratzinger at dinner parties/get-togethers? If Papa doesn't attend, I think its more b/c of his busy schedule.

"The embassy is on Whitehaven Street, within walking distance of the nunciature."
See, here's where having that "papal skateboard" will really come in handy! .

Robert George, a leading Catholic scholar at Princeton University, implied he'd be meeting privately with the pope in Washington but refused to divulge details.
George serves on the President's Council on Bioethics (a topic of concern for this Pope, as his predecessor) and is also involved in John McCain's presidential campaign. Collaboration between the Vatican and a notable Neocon? -- One can only speculate . . . ;-)

Several hundred people, including a wide range of local Catholics and Vice President Dick Cheney, have been invited. Many are hoping Benedict will show.
Vice President Dick Cheney and Pope Benedict- I'd love to be a fly on the wall if and when they meet. That has the potential to be a very interesting conversation.

I have a feeling that the Pope likes dinner parties with good conversation and old friends, or even with new friends. Big celebrity events, probably not so much, although he probably bears with them.
