I don't know about the appropriatness of the NYT story. However, Mrs. Cindy McCain response that "More importantly, my children and I not only trust my husband, but know that he would never do anything to not only disappoint our family, but disappoint the people of America. He's a man of great character,"
Wasn't Senator McCain carrying on with her while still married (always married in God's eyes) to his first wife?

That is a good point to raise. I've updated the original post to reflect it.

What is the point in prying into someone's personal life unless it can really have something to do with the governance of a country? You are not called to elect a Pope, but a temporal leader.
What about King David? He was not only an adulterer, but a murderer as well, yet he is one of the great figures of the Bible.

Actually, King David is a perfect example for why this sort of thing matters. King David's exploits in his personal life effected his judgement as king resulting in, for instance, the massacre of one of his troup divisions.
I'd like to have seen David try to run for re-election after Bathsheba-gate.

It is possible that God gives us our punishments in this life in dribs and drabs...but perfectly measured...in the inimitable words of the King James, let us look at David at the end of life when he seems to have received a very mixed blessing-punishment perhaps...since Tobias says..."all Thy ways are mercy and truth and judgement":
1Ki 1:1 ¶ Now king David was old [and] stricken in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he gat no heat.
1Ki 1:2 Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let there be sought for my lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before the king, and let her cherish him, and let her lie in thy bosom, that my lord the king may get heat.
1Ki 1:3 So they sought for a fair damsel throughout all the coasts of Israel, and found Abishag a Shunammite, and brought her to the king.
1Ki 1:4 And the damsel [was] very fair, and cherished the king, and ministered to him: but the king knew her not.

Sigh,
You know, if it weren't for the existence of Viagra, McCain could very easily have just given the Cephalus defense (Oh Socrates happily did I escape it!) about any possible affair. As it is, I really question if this really was "news fit to print" as the NYT so humbly proclaims to produce on a regular basis. I love that they sat on this story for, oh, I don't know, seven years before bringing it into the public forum. No agenda there. None. Combine this with the amount of actual plagiarism that the NYT has (albeit unknowingly) published in that same span of time, one wonders why the Clintons haven't gone after the publishers like they did with Obama. Oh. Wait. I think I know why.
In the interest of being "fair and balanced" about this thing, someone please tell me if Bill O'Reilly is sounding off about Bill Clinton's exploits and comparing them with the current McCain situation tonight on "The Factor." If he isn't, I'll eat my hat.

KATHERINE SAID: "Wasn't Senator McCain carrying on with her while still married (always married in God's eyes) to his first wife?"
Folks, Katherine here is a wide-eyed liberal Democrat. Their mantra for their on immoral people is, "That's his private life and none of anyone else's business."
But of course they hold everyone else to a higher standard. Isn't that right Katherine.
Ya'll need to go to her blog, Catholics for Obama and see how she treats those who disagree with her. She censors their posts.
