Gravatar Well our Catholic University of America (which we are both close to) is inviting John Kerry to speak. This is why I never had the desire to go to a "Catholic" university

Gravatar When I see a white academic with either (a) cornrows or (b) Kente cloth, I usually turn and run. Thanks for the reminder as to why!

Gravatar I just sent this to John Schlegel, President of Creighton University:
—————————-
Mr. Schlegel,

I am a parent of a teen researching colleges and universities, and I strongly believe that a choice should be made on more than just the academic status of a school. Things like campus culture, opportunities for strengthening students’ faith, vocational guidance and tradition are all important. Extra-curricular activities say a lot about a school–guest speakers, performances, etc–and that is why I am writing to tell you that Creighton University will not be an option for our family. The very idea that a Catholic University could condone the propagation of anti-Catholic, anti-Christian ideas from someone who supports abortion and euthanasia (and by supports, I mean Ms. Lamott actively participated in murdering a friend with illegally obtained drugs, according to her own words) is unfathomable to me. Today’s young Catholics are yearning for clear moral teaching, as are their parents. Endorsing beliefs that are completely opposite to thousands of years of Christian thought is not the way to attract families who strive to follow the Church’s teaching on these ultimate life issues.

I strongly encourage you to reconsider this scheduled event, and to review others which may have similar moral inconsistencies with even your own university mission statement, let alone the mind of the Church.
———————
I encourage others out there to voice their disappointment as well!

Gravatar Well, that bothers me, but the fact that you wrote "a women" bothers me too =P

Gravatar Does a university necessarily endorse the views of someone whom it invites to speak?

Students who are properly trained should be able to distinguish between truth and falsehood. It could be that the speaker will be challenged by students in the audience with questions that expose the errors in her teachings.

Gravatar brassband: yes, I think a paid lecture constitutes endorsement. Or, reading from their website about the event, you can certainly see that by sponsoring this event, they equate it with the intended goal of the Center:

"The Creighton Center for Health Policy & Ethics devotes itself to excellence in teaching and scholarship, service to others, and the promotion of justice with a special focus on the socially marginalized members of society. The Women and Health Lecture series highlight issues that are critical to the health and well-being of women."

Sounds like an endorsement of her and her work to me.

Gravatar Hmm . . . "socially marginalized members of society." I love the language of the left . . .

I'm thinking that one who runs the risk of having her skull punctured and her brains sucked out would, if given a "choice," probably prefer to be "socially marginalized" rather than murdered while being born.

Of course, I guess those aborted babies never really get the opportunity to demonstrate sustained excellence in scholarship, do they.

Gravatar Here is who needs to hear our voices (along with the president of CU):

Dr. Amy Haddad, Director
Creighton University Medical Center
Center for Health Policy and Ethics

You can read all about it (and get Haddad’s e-mail address too) from my blog post this morning.

Gravatar Just read on their site that Crieghton and Ms. Lamott have "mutally" cancelled the presentation.

Yippee!

Gravatar An excellent move on Creighton's part!
