Gravatar Deep down, I want him to resign because he's a *liberal*, and this would serve as an impetus therunto. I don't think that is healthy.

Isn't he 74 anyway? Or do I have that wrong?

Gravatar mahony is 71. we can look forward to at least 4 more years of his reign.

Gravatar Mahoney should quietly and peacefully resign.
And take Tod Brown with him.

Gravatar He's liberal. Being liberal means "never having to say you're sorry." Now if he were conservative, he'd definitely have to go. Tom

Gravatar Can someone explain the reason for the resignation, viz the sex scandal?

Was Card. Mahony in place when the abuse occurred? I thought this conduct occurred decades ago when these victims were young adolescents. Was Card. Mahony involved in hiding the abuse? In protecting the abusers?

I'm just asking, because I haven't heard any of the evidence.

Gravatar Mahony is 71 years old and if no action is done will serve as Archbishop for 4 more years. Of course, he could be "reassigned" to Rome for some "keeper of the footstool" position as was Cardinal Law.

Bishops have a tough job. Not all are suitable for it. Regretablly, most bishops see themselves as defenders and moderators for the 50-yard line of theology, culture, and politics. That is not ideally what a bishop is.

Gravatar Just a quick comment on the CNA headline featured in this post. I have seen this headline in the secular press as well. I hope it is seen more as the expression of the Holy See to combat sexual abuse in all its forms wherever it may exist. Rather than merely pointing (perhaps rightfully so) the spotlight elsewhere. In short I hope the secular press doesn't see Fr. Lombardi's statement as merely "Hey don't just look at us, they are doing it too". There is more to the statement than that. That being said I am not putting money on the secular press being so fair.

Gravatar Michael, you are so right. Trying to be on the 50 yard line is not the place to be. The Faith has never about being popular or polling well. Tom

Gravatar Cardinal Mahoney should resign before his 75th birthday. His long reign in LA has been an unmittigated disaster for the Catholic Faith in that beleagured city.

I pray for his successor. Whoever he may be, I hope he brings Orkin in with him...
