I think the adjective here would be "addicted", not "addictive".
But there is a difference between being an "avid" chess player and an "addicted" one, in that avid players, unliked "addicted" ones, do not omit basic duties to play chess. They might spend all, or thereabouts, of their free time playing chess, but they do not make free time by failing in other responsibilities. My recollection is that you met your youthful responsibilities in life at the time, and then played chess around it pretty much constantly (to the point where I never again beat you as White, and I would only win about 1 in 4 as Black).
Or did I miss something?

Thom! I return from an (unwilling) internet hiatus to find that you did not write anything about the House season finale! I need to hear from someone as stymied as I am.
Sincerely,
your fellow "House M.D." afficianado,
Kate
