Hmmmmm.....Can someone say Philosophy 101?
Rosa DeLauro and liberal mafia get offended every time the holy father makes a definitive church statement. What a shame. It's like holy water at an exorcism. Let's drive out those evil spirits that are influencing those apostate catholics. Pick up the rosaries and fight.

I am not a philosopher or theologian; neither am I the brightest bulb on the chandelier. In the current debate I see the following problems which perhaps smarter people than myself may be able to build on.
1) One does not need to be Catholic in order to be a politician.
2) Because one does not need to be Catholic in order to be a politician, any movement by the Catholic Church against Catholic politicians cannot be considered as political but rather as Ecclesial. An excommunicated Catholic still remains a politician. IF (As the idiot left proclaims) RELIGION OUGHT NOT TO HAVE A BEARING ON OUR NATIONS POLITICS THEN THE EXCOMMUNICATION OF PSEUDO-CATHOLIC POLITICIANS OUGHT OT HAVE NO BEARING ON IT.
3)Because no politician needs to be Catholic in order to be a politician, any attempt by Catholic politicians, or by the secular press which pimps for them, to thwart the Catholic Church's right to govern its membership should be seen as a governmental attempt at hampering the mission of the Church.

Thom, I like your cartoon depicting USCCB. Pretty much somes up what they are - a useless debating society, kind of like the UN. If the USCCB were truly concerned about abortion they would strike why the iron is hot and excommunicate the lot of them. Such resoluteness might actually gain the Church some new adherents who are tired of marshmellow religion and cause the Church to retain true believers who are constantly being offended by these weak-kneed "shepards." Could we possibly watch our language in the combox? I'm all for criticism, but keeping it on an intellectual/mature footing would certainly help Nick!

I'm from CT and from DeLaura's archdiocese. I called both her office (203-562-3718) and Archbishop Mansell's office (860-541-6491). The archbishop's secretary was very receptive to pass on my message.
I urged the archbishop to respond to this attack and to do more to defend human life.
If anyone else calls, please always be respectful.

The bottom line is that the "catholic" democrats' true loyalty is to their party not to the Church.

Personally I loved Leahy's red herring. Classic.
Especially when during the height of the scandal I saw him at an Ash Wednesday Mass I was at on Capitol Hill.
Now to his credit, he along with some other Democratic Senators took off before Communion after recieving ashes.
As for Dim Blub, you're right, you don't need to be Catholic in order to be a politician and an excommunicated Catholic politician does not automaticaly lose their office. However, most politicians use their faith and their "devotion" to it as a resume enhancer. A politician publically unwelcome in their chosen faith would not be seen in a favorable light.
Yes, they could convert to a more "tolerant" religion and make a big show of it in the process, but it would only hurt them more with the congregation they left behind.

They seem to be replacing the digit "eight."
