When I first saw this story today I was hoping your father would chime in. I figured the story was way off in the interpretation of these Canons. Though it appears a lot of Catholic blogs jumped on the bandwagon that pro-abort politicians are automatically excommunicated.
The AP reporter really wants to make it seem like the Vatican is contradicting itself by placing "they should not receive communion" right after "they're not excommunicated" and never explaining what's the difference between excommunication and not being able to receive communion. It's a common misperception that there's no difference between the two, and I get the impression the poor reporter misperceives the issue too.
