Another great book on the way we conceive of rights is the new American ambassador to the Vatican, Mary Anne Glendon's book "Rights Talk." Her critique is that part of American conception of rights is the 'right to be left alone."
Correct, a "negative freedom" of sorts.
I've read JS's book. It's excellent, and she makes good use of Glendon's work.
