Gravatar Congratulations to Archbishop Burke! I always thought that he had potential! It will be a loss for the Church in the US, but we shouldn't begrudge him this opportunity!

Gravatar Part of what this means is that Americans now head two of the three top Tribunals - Burke at the Signatura and Stafford at the Penitentiary. Add to that Levada at the CDF, which has competence to try certain cases of clerical malfeasance, and we've got a strong American presence among the Vatican judiciary.

So the next time someone tries to tell you that Rome scorns American tribunals and canonists and our supposedly "loosey-goosey" ways, you can't point this out to them.

Now we just have to revive lay Cardinals and find a way of making Ed Peters president of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts...

Gravatar Thomas: check out Amy Welborn's post on this, which links to John Allen's coverage, with his usual insights and analysis.

Gravatar Well, I don't think we'll be seeing much more of Burke publically. He'll mostly be handling appeals. This fits his personality much better.

Gravatar Is the AMERICAN PAPIST having trouble sleeping? Why are all your posts around 3 a.m....never mind...that might be too personal.

Gravatar I only read the first page of comments on the STLtoday link, and based on that small sample, he's not going to be missed by many in St. Louis. I'll be curious who is successor will be.

Gravatar Nathan, just because a bunch of jerks post their contempt for this holy man on the net, why do you feel a need to call additional attention to it?

Gravatar I was just seeking what the reaction of those in St. Louis was and was struck by some of what I had read and made an innocuous comment about it. I can't say I'm surprised by the negative reviews of his tenure. People, especially non-Catholics, don't like to hear what they don't want to hear, and Burke, by speaking clearly on Church teachings, frequently did that. He'll do well in Rome.

I could see Finn being named as his replacement, even if he's only been leading KC-St. Joe for 3 years. We shall see.

I think that those who have bad things to say about another person are usually the most vocal in public comboxes.

Gravatar How wonderful for Archbishop Burke. Too bad for us. He is an excellent example of what a bishop should act like. Congratulations, Archbishop Burke!!

Gravatar Mr. Peters,

Simply because someone disagrees with you about Archbishop Burke does not mean he is a "jerk."

Geez, calm down a bit.

I do not have "contempt" for the Archbishop. While I agreed with the Archbishop most of the time, he seemed to go overboard sometimes. For example, he stated he would deny Communion to Kerry before actually meeting with him to discuss the issue. I can't remember: was Kerry even going to attend Mass in St. Louis? Sorry, inappropriate and brutta figura.

If Kerry wasn't attending Mass in St. Louis, why did Burke feel the need to inject himself into the mix? Should not that have been left to Kerry's own ordinary?

Gravatar We are losing a wonderful, pastoral archbishop unafraid to teach and uphold the Catholic faith here in Saint Louis. All that the dear man has endured here reminds me of the following quote:
"The brothers of the patriarch Joseph could never have done him so much good with their love and favor as they did him with their malice and hatred" Saint Thomas More

Gravatar Dear Will, who ever you are. People are not jerks because they disagree with me. People are jerks for posting the kind of things that most people posted there about Abp. Burke on that site. I am glad you did not have contempt for Burke. Most of the people posting there, and hiding behind anonymity, did have such contempt. And they were jerks.

Gravatar Congratulations to the Archbishop! I wonder who will succeed him in St. Louis....?

Gravatar What kind of a bishop wouldn't speak up about a disobedient Catholic candidate who did campaign all over the country?

Burke is apparently the one of the few who love God enough to be willing to incur the wrath of the world in order to defend our Lord Jesus Christ. Do you know that it is the teaching of the Church that one may not receive communion in a state of manifest and grave sin? Kerry to this day eats and drinks death to himself and shows contempt for Jesus Christ EVERYTIME he receives Holy Communion. Read St. Paul I Cor. 11. The bishops who don't do anything are lax and I doubt how much they really believe in the Real Presence of our Lord in the Holy Eucharist or their love for Jesus. Jesus said, If you love me, keep may commandments. Is it loving God and is it charitable to not care about the souls of those who receive in a state of mortal sin? I think not.
Show me, your Excellencies your own obedience to the magisterium and I will believe you when you profess love for the God who will come to judge the living and the dead.

Gravatar Abp. Burke has been building a strong case for being called to Rome for a long time now. He's got an episcopal fan club in the United States. He's known for strict and swift adherance to doctrine, yet he got no call to Rome for a long time.

Then Thomas Peters goes to St. Louis and the NEXT THING YOU KNOW, Abp. Burke is getting a corner office in Rome.

Good work, Thomas. The good Archbishop should be sending you a thank-you card soon enough.

Gravatar Does anyone know anything about Aux. Bishop Hermann? Is he in the mold of Burke?
