She's not an empty suit, she's just being messed up by all the coaching she has received. I've heard her speak freely and off the cuff before all of this, and she's not an airhead.
McCain: stop shoving the talking point down her throat! There are moments when I think you want to lose to the biggest joke of an empty-suit liberal there ever was.
My guess is that in an effort to sound like she "knows" things, her confidence is being undermined a bit. Although she needs to speak concretely about issues, she's not at home with the facts and figures that candidates tend to throw around until they become meaningless. Yet, if they don't throw numbers around, they come of as lacking knowledge.
The best thing the campaign can do is unleash her.
McCain is smart, but I'm not especially happy that he's the candidate. He leaves a lot to be desired.
If Mary Shaw is going to be so supremely disrespectful and organize a flood of donations to Planned Parenthood in Palin's name, I say we organize a flood of emails to Ms. Shaw. I'm going to email her right now and tell her how disgusting that is.

You can do the opposite - donate to the American Life League (or another pro-life organization, or the Missionaries of Charity, whatever) in the name of PP.
