As a Protestant, I find the Washing of the Feet rather fascinating, nothing like it in the Presby church. It's an unusual but captivating ritual; the Pope went about his duties both in simplicity and devotion.

Evelyn, in the bottom photo the Pope is blessing the holy oils, which includes breathing on them. (Every bishop does this in his own Chrism Mass.)
I take personal delight in the photo second from top--I don't remember what the liturgical umbrella is called, but it is fun to see it used!

The Liturgical 'umbrella' is called an ombrellino. It is used when the Blessed Sacrament is carried formally away from the Sanctuary.

I love the Chrism Mass - one of the best liturgies of the year. But, the last pic does look like a big spitoon.
