I too have scratched my head over the Arab building frenzy, but I'm less inclined to see a Tower of Babel mentality at work. Rather, it seems more akin to a "cultural adolescence". Teenagers can't wait to show off their skills, and either can cultures that suddenly become indescribably rich and, at least at the top, technologically modern.
Of course, entry into the 20/21 century comes at a price. Saudi superscrapers will have to be built to withstand jumbo jets. And that, in turn, might impact the Saudi's long-term cozy relationship with some groups who, till now, have not been much a threat to any thing local.

Do you know who else had a tower 1-mile high? The Jedi. And look what happened to them.

I don't know. I think it's fine that they're spending all their wealth on buildings. Better that than air craft carriers or other armaments. It's also make-work projects for their huge population of foreign workers who need work... and it's a business enterprise investment as a means to prepare for the day when oil runs out.
I just don't agree that everything is criticism-worthy.

I hope that computer system has some really good fail-over mechanisms or this is going to be a really short lived project.

Well, when you find someone who does so think, let us know. I've never met such a chap, myself.

I keep reading this over and over for the April Fools joke.
But I don't think it's there.

gjoe,
I took this one seriously at first, but the more that I think about it the more suspicious I am of the timing.
No one is admitting to it, but I am pretty sure that this one is an April Fools story.
