I've been telling people through the years: Potter is a good series filled with a Christian message, written in Lewis' Narnian tradition. Pullman is the real deal, the real evil; how else can you describe a series which wants to be Nietzsche for children?

Mr. Karlson, I'm no Potter fan, but if these books are worse, I agree that they must be avoided. Here's my post:

I agree with Thomas, the word is indeed getting out. Go Catholic bloggers!

My 15 yr old and my 9 yr old sons asked me about seeing this, and when I told them that we wouldn't be seeing it because the man that wrote the books they are based on wants to convince children that God doesn't exist, they were angry...at Pullman!

Personally, I love the books and plan to see the movies. I disagree completely with the theological prospects of the books, and have very little respect for Pullman as a person, but the books are well written and a good read.
I think more harm is done by simply avoiding all things we hear are controversial. I would personally allow my children to see it, would go with them, and would follow it with a talk about the nature of fiction and reality, and tell them that it is important to experience everything, and be well informed about other points of view, rather than covering our ears and hiding our heads in the sand.

andrew--check them out from the library (books and movie when it's out) if you must, but don't give Pullman a dime to support his anti-Christian work.
Deciding not to support or endorse something you don't believe in is hardly hiding your head in the sand. And discussing why you don't believe in, and thus don't support it, is hardly covering your ears.
And children don't need to be "exposed" to "other points of view" that they're not ready for in the interest of "being well informed," and they certainly don't need to "experience everything."

You're right Lori, about not giving Pullman a dime for his anti-Catholic diatribe.I'm sure there are racist screeds out there which I DON'T need to experience, I don't care how well written they are.
Letting young children go to a movie you disagree with is dangerous, movies are very emtionally powerful and all the talking in the world may not erase a deep reaction. Don't gamble with your children's faith, it's the most precious gift they have.
I saw movies my parents disagreed with as a college student, when I 'knew better', was affected by them, and spent years doing foolish things inspired by the movies I saw.
Better support "Bella" on Oct 26, or get the DVD of "Amazing Grace" on Nov 13, and show your children true heroes, AND great stories.
