I think, based on the trailer, you could even argue that it's (unknowingly) a shot at some of the free-wheeling behavior (Hoffman's character) that many identify with the generation of priests who entered the church immediately following Vatican II. The nun played by Streep, however, is consistent with the kind of anecdotes that the baby-boom generation tells their kids about nuns in the 50s. That being said, I think that it looks like a very interesting character study and one that is clearly meant to play off of obvious types. I agree with Cabaniss about Phillip Seymour Hoffman: he's an amazing actor, but will this be too (im)politic of a role in the end? I'm not sure. Perhaps my apprehension and squeamishness are signs of an even-handed display of things that are true? Or am I being an optimistic moron?

Is this to be a cineplay for all times? Elizabeth Seton discovers an I-Pod? I am only wondering if there is some archetype (stereotype) trying to be portrayed by the costumes given the anachronisms I have seen thus far. It may be a good movie.
BTW just found this site today and am enjoying it.

It could be bad but I think that this movie could surprise.

For what I have read of the stage play, I believe that the Sister is supposed to be a challenger of the bad male hierarchy. Of course, that view may have been a misinterpretation by the author of the (positive) review I read.

Anything with Meryl Streep playing a religious sister in it can not be good.

The most scandalous part of all this is probably that Father is wearing a cassock. Haha. Seriously though, wow... This looks pretty interesting. But Streep's character has a problem. If she is the really Pre-VII sister that she is portrayed as, she wouldn't dare challenge a Priest. This is a characteristic of modernist religious.

It looks like it could be quite good provided that it treats the grave subject matter seriously and reasonably, which (as we well know) is often not the case. If it does succeed, it could be a great piece of art.

Its the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph. the order was founeded by Mother Seton in the 1600s in Emmitsburg, Md. The habit is formed of a widow's dress from back then, as Mother Seton was a widow when she founded her order. They later commbined with the larger Sisters of Charity congregation. Can anyone tell I went to Mount St Mary's in Emmitsburg?

To fh in Houston:
The story takes place in 1964, and the student is listening to a transistor radio, not an iPod. To us that's only a tinny mono AM radio, but back then it was cutting-edge technology.

Thanks for the info. I could not see it well in the video. I remember pocket radios in the 70's, just didn't think it went back that far.

Hmmm... MIRAMAX....
Strike one.
Meryl Streep a nun...
Strike two.
Well, see...
But, I can't imagine this movie portraying Catholicism accurately. So, dare I guess that at least the young goodhearted nun leaves the religious life at the end.

Cinema will be cinema; it definitely looks like a dramatic tell of the situation. It's amazing the difference 50 years of film will make to the portrayal of Catholic faith and culture. E.G., The Bells of St. Mary's.
I am not blatantly offended by anything in the trailer, although it is probably too much to hope for some accurate portrayal of genuine faith&reason in this movie...
