The way it's being reported most people seem to think that this is now official church teaching. It's not-- it's the opinion of the Vatican's chief astronomer. Only 1 man can speak for the Vatican.

Isn't it already in Gather? And didn't Joncas re-work the wording a bit to get something about bread-breaking in there?
John is correct, but the reasoning is sound. There simply is no reason to think that God could not create creatures on other planets with various intelligences. Ensoulment is another matter, of course, the analysis of which would require considerable theological development. But I cannot imagine why the Church would have a doctrine forbidding one from holding a speculative belief in aliens.

The basic theory of the Catholic Church is that if a being *seems* to be a moral creature, we're obliged to treat it as one-- thing that *bugs* me to no end about the various "evil Church tries to kill off the Elves" stories.
