AmericanPapist Comments

Gravatar This is great. What can we do in the parish with regard to Pelosi-gate?
Would it be wrongly political to mention her interview and then refute it with the teaching of the Church?
Could we use this USCCB fact sheet as an insert in the parish bulletin or even be sent out in a mass-mailing to all parishioners? Any thoughts on this from pastors and others?

Gravatar My own pastor this past Sunday brought up her comments as an opportunity to underscore the history of the Church's teaching on this topic.

While a mass-mailing seems like a bit much, inserting it in a bulletin seems very appropriate and helpful, and indeed what the USCCB issued the document for...

Gravatar Would it be wrongly political to mention her interview and then refute it with the teaching of the Church?

No. And that is what makes Pelosi's statements the colossal blunder that they are from the Left POV and a gift-wrapped present to the Church. By appealing to theology, she opened the door.

Gravatar As someone else has mentioned, this issue needs to be brought to bear on the Biden candidacy.

Gravatar there's our woman in the trenches, Deirdre!!! Thank God for her work!!

Gravatar This incident is not actually about Pelosi; it is about a church that has spent most of its energies (especially for those of her generation) focusing on "CCD" education for children, rather than Catholic adults. Most kids -- even today -- are Confirmed and...that's it! No more faith formation: my niece (at the age of 14) told me, just a few years ago: "Now I know everything, Uncle Mike - no more classes on the Catholic Church!!" Pelosi's ignorance is the Church's fault; not hers.

Gravatar What happened to the promised statement of Pelosi's bishop?

Gravatar You're right, Mike, about the sad state of adult Catholics' knowledge of their religion (I know, I'm a CCD kid). But respectfully disagree with your statement that "Pelosi's ignorance is the Church's fault; not hers." She is nowhere close to ignorance - she did not get CCD but instead a great Catholic education at a fine girls school (hey, she went to h.s. with my mother, although my mom remembers riding the city bus to school while seeing Nancy pull up in a limo...and maybe that's not really beside the point).
For me the greatest irony is that Pelosi's wild statement is the first one of hers that I have ever understood clearly. Usually, about 30 seconds in to her tortured answers, my brain starts to overheat trying to figure out what in the world she is trying to say. I have to mute the tv or risk setting off the smoke detector.

Gravatar Joe C, I'm not so sure she received a great Catholic education. She was coming of age in the 60s and that's when Catholic teaching went into a tailspin. I know, I was there, and there was a great deal of heterodoxy. Tom

Gravatar This should be put in every Church bulletin in the United States.

Gravatar I'm going to go out on a limb and claim that this is more like an almost internal Catholic issue than one dealing with any specific politcal party. Had a Republican Catholic (e.g. Guiliani) made the same statements as Pelosi, the same teachings would still have to be emphasized.

Gravatar I have just linked our 40 days for life website to the bishop's explanation.

This needs to be shouted from the rooftops while it is fresh in the media.

If we display and spread this teaching, few will ever again be able to claim ignorance.

God is bringing good from evil. He is good all the time.

Gravatar I am glad for the Fact Sheet.
But the issue remains that the moral fuzzy teaching is still going on.
I agree with the above regarding CCD or however she got her education. She was reflecting what she has been taught. What about the teachers, the books and the theologians that continue to teach contrary to the magisterium?
Nancy and I could have had the same moral theology book. Really, it was up to US whether or not these things were right or wrong. The Church had its views (opinions) but we made up our mind in the end.
Glad for all of this but it ain't over.

Gravatar Another Bishop.

This just in from the Catholic Sentinel on Fratres. Bishop Vasa weighs in...

jme

Gravatar I see Cardinal O'Malley has now mentioned the Pelosi incident on his blog:
