There should be a box: "I did plan (reluctantly) to vote for McCain, and still plan to (but less reluctantly)."

Ditto what the above commenter said. Also, now I'll actually be bothered to put out yard signs and make phone calls in October. It didn't change my vote, but it did make me want to actually work to get the ticket elected.

I did not plan to vote for McCain and I still don't, no matter how much I might like Sarah Palin.
McCain ultimately stands for pre-emptive war and the fiscal policies that come with that.
America still had two poor options.
I'm voting, I just haven't decided yet how or who yet. It won't be the Dems or the Repubs.

17% jump, that is pretty significant.

I find that this poll, like most, is practically worthless because the questions are forced choices: "Will you vote for McCain or not?" There's no room for people who are genuinely unconvinced either way--people who have a lot to hear and see and analyze before November.

Sean. You make a good point. I've added a 5th option to the poll. People are welcome to change their vote if option #5 is more accurate for them.

I agree with a lot of commenters, before the Palin pick I knew I wouldn't vote for Obama and would probably vote for McCain but was considering going 3rd party. Now I'll definitely be voting McCain unless he does something drastic (like support some sort of intrinsic evil that kills and wounds the same order of magnitude of people that abortion does).

I've trudged out to vote Republican ever since I first could (I'm the same age as Sarah Palin). This would include Nov 3, 1992, when I voted for GHW Bush on my way to the hospital, after my water broke; I was barely 8 months pregnant. :) So, yeah, I would have voted for McCain anyway, but we just donated for the first time since '04 or so. We're really enthusiastic!

I checked "I did not plan to vote McCain, but now I might"; however, I think I'm more like the first commenter. If I don't have to work late on Tue Nov 4 and have nothing else planned and don't see long lines at the polls on my way home, then I probably would've voted for McCain anyway. Now it's on my Outlook calendar to leave work early and vote.

Voting for Senator Obama IS like a chicken voting for Colonel Sanders.
On the other hand, voting for John McCain is a vote for our country's security (what pre-emptive war are you talking about - the one that came after maybe 50 ignored UN resolutions and with a full vote of the U.S. Congress as required by our constitution) against people who don't really care if you have doubts about your presidential pick, because it's their intent that you never have the privilege of voting again!
Seen in that light, maybe voting for John McCain doesn't look so bad after all? It sure doesn't to me. If you nation is not secure, all the rest of the jibber jabber is absolutely meaningless.

My vote for McCain was riding on his VP pick. He made the right call - Ridge or Lieberman would have pushed me to a 3rd party.

the one that ends with "...now i might" should have ended with "...now i will" because that's i'm firm on my decision already. you should keep that in mind when analyzing the tally.
how about a second poll on monetary contributions? because not only did the palin selection got me to make up my mind, it got me to give money!

I agree with Anthony. I was never sold on McCain, mainly because of the war issue. While I like her as a person, I'm not sure Palin is ready to lead the country should (God forbid) something happen to McCain.

Pax and Anthony - you can come to some conclusion on what someone will do in an unfamiliar situation by the judgment and character they have demonstrated in other situations. Sara has a good head on her shoulders. I would trust her to make the right decision on just about anything.

Anthony,
Amen, brother. I wonder if you've ever heard of Joe Schriner? Check him out at www.voteforjoe.com
Gayle Miller,
Actually, I'm pretty sure that Anthony meant "preventative war" as opposed to "preemptive war." While the latter is sometimes justifiable based on traditional Catholic thought, the former (of which the current war in Iraq is the case) is never justifiable through traditional Just War theory.

McCain seems to be the one who had the best plan for Iraq after things started to go haywire other there. The surge was his idea. Lieberman and Lindsay Graham and others supported him and got President Bush's backing for it.
My Marine son had McCain and all of the above in his CH-46 helicopter in Dec. 2006 when the above congressional delegation went to Iraq on a fact-finding mission before the surge was announced by the president in January 2007.
It was also a dangerous time to be flying in helicopters in Iraq, and yet McCain took the risk and went. Chuck Norris also took the risk and visited my son's helicopter squadron at that time, too. I believe the Commandant made him an honorary Marine.
The Marines are moving out of Iraq to Afghanistan according to General Conway because there is no Marine 'action' to speak of anymore in Iraq. The Army can do everything there now. My son reports being bored.
In McCain's speech, he mentioned how he hated war. I thought it was very sincere given his experience in the prison camp. He also has sons involved. I did not realise that he has 7 children!

Nan, I hope she will. But my gut tells me she won't, and on big decisions like this, my gut is what I listen to.
As the name implies, I'm a bit of a peacenik, and I worry that Palin (or McCain) may start more un-Just Wars.
And then there's Obama... oy vey.
