Dude,
have you read the editorial review for the Anne Rice book on Amazon???? I think I already saw this movie; didn't Willem Dafoe play Jesus? Gotta love boring ol' process theology, er, Arianism, trotted out under the guise of a novel. Well, at least Anne could claim the free license of the novelist here, if she's smart.

Thomas,
I enjoy your blog. I have been reading the Christ the Lord series and would love to see a post on your thoughts about the book. I've found it to be a very prayerful meditation. Many orthodox (little "o") reviewers seem to enjoy trashing her for reasons external to her Christ the Lord series. You may pay particular attention to her author's note in the paperback edition of her first book of the series.

I wouldn't read a book on Christ by a person who is openly opposed to the church's teachings - or even one teaching, as that would still mean the person does not recognize the Church's divine authority. In Anne Rice's case, I heard she thinks the Church's teaching on homosexuality is wrong.
Christ is too important a subject to risk getting the wrong ideas about. I'd rather read Pope Benedict XVI's book on Him.

I paged through Christ the Lord in the bookstore. Seemed a little purple to me. I remember, back in my "thrilling" Gnostic days, reading Jose Saramago's Gospel According to Jesus Christ.
Stunningly well written heresy. But there was no thin guise about it. It's, for me, the difference between watching The Last temptation of Christ and any of the hallmark Jesus!! movies of the late 90's.
The Hallmark Jesus was sappy... true to the text, but sappy and dainty.
There's the real Modern error, to me. The unchallenging Jesus.
At least in Temptation, I can point to this and that and say, well that's black and white wrong, but some of it's also beautiful. The real danger in in the purple sap.
There's nothing "wrong" with it, except everything, and you just can't put your finger on it....
Either that, or burn the lot of it....
