Not to be too picky (but, actually, to be kinda picky) this appears to have been a burglary, not a robbery.
Although the terms are sometimes used interchangeably in casual conversation, they are legally different.
Robbery involves taking property by force from the person of the victim. Because of the personal danger posed to the victim, robbery is generally a far more serious offense than burglary.
Burglary involves breaking into a dwelling to commit a crime therein (usually larceny), and does not require the victim to be present when the crime is committed.
Because the Archbishop was evidently many miles away when these thieves broke in to his home, this sounds to me like a burglary, not a robbery.

What do you suppose one (namely a burglar) would do with a bishops' ring? That'd be a very interesting thing to try and pawn off.
I hope they 'choose wisely' what action they take with them!
But Tom, perhaps they are of the unfortunately collective of young americans who never saw the original Indiana Jones?!
