Gravatar McCain's record on ESCR is not spotless and Palin's tacit support of contraception is no secret. McCain-Palin is not a winning ticket for non-negotiable Catholic voters, either.

Gravatar Thomas,

I blogged on this on Tuesday of this week. While I agree with Both Deal Hudson and Steve Ertelt on this division among Catholics, I have a lot more to add in my post If Barack Obama Becomes President.... which you can read here: http://catholicfire.blogspot.com...- president.html

My readers also have some very interesting comments to add.

Gravatar So, when Doug Kmiec presents his credentials to the Vatican as ambassador, what sort of welcome will he get?

(Would be even funnier if Cdl. Burke were Vatican's SecState.)

Gravatar Should the worst happen, will Obama as the first black president be responsible for starting the second civil war? It is true that we are already engaged in a civil war (and of course a spiritual one as well), but the only persons dying are those who can’t defend themselves, the children in their mothers’ wombs. With Obama as president, will pro-lifers finally get fed up enough to fervently protest the killing of the unborn at the risk of being physically attacked by those who support the slaughter of these innocents? We can say, but can’t prove, that we would have laid down our lives for our captive brothers and sisters if we had lived during the slavery vs. abolition era. What say we now during the next phase of the abortion vs. abolition era? We must continue to be prayerful and peaceful, but we must also be much more active and fervent in our defense of the unborn and not allow fear of anyone or anything to deter us.

Gravatar There's a fundamental right to health care?

Gravatar "I don't want my daughters burdened with a mistake" and "I want to thank Planned Parenthood for all the hard work they are doing . . . for men who have enough sense to realize the work you a doing for them". Obama does not want to reduce abortions. It is no big deal to him. In fact it is great service to the country. Men won't have to pay child support and he won't have to support his daughters.

You call this a better "CHOICE" for your president?

As for me, IF Obama wins, I can go to Mass the Sunday after the election with a clear conscience, then watch the nuttiness begin.

Gravatar Eric:

I'll McCain and Palin over pro infanticide Obama any day.

Gravatar If Obama wins, we Christians will be entering a new age of Babylonian captivity.

Gravatar If Obama wins I'm trying to decide what country I'm moving to, any good ideas?

Gravatar If Obama wins I'm trying to decide what country I'm moving to, any good ideas?

Respectfully, this sounds too much like the "I'm moving to Canada if the Republicans win" we get from washed-up celebrities. Gallantry rather than sour grapes is the proper deportment that will distinguish us from the shrill progressives.

Gravatar brady:

Nowhere else to go. We're the last country with free speech, as all of the rest of the West have hate speech laws.

We're the last one with the right to bear arms.

We're better off fighting an Obama administration. I say we march to DC and protest every thing he does that contradicts our values and morals.

Gravatar If Obama wins it could have the beneficial effect of forcing the Republicans to actually be conservative. Or better yet, ending the GOP and allowing for the formation of new ideological coalition bound together by a shared adherence to the words of the constitution.

McCain will lose because he's not conservative, not because the american people are not.

Endless war, endless taxing and endless social engineering - thats what both candidates promise.

Gravatar fh in Houston, you got the quotation wrong. Obama actually said, "I don't want my daughters PUNISHED with a baby..."

Both candidates (Obama and McCain) are wrong on life issues - Obama has three strikes (pro-abortion, pro-ESCR, pro-contraception), McCain has two strikes (pro-ESCR, pro-contraception). There's simply not an acceptable choice for us in this election. At least not a viable choice...

Gravatar Anthony (6:48pm) is basically correct. Other than abortion, there isn't much to distinguish between the two parties. Today the GOP is Democratic Lite (tm). Both parties are now "big government" types.

After losing this fall, the GOP will either have another Regan Revolution, or it will be usurped in 10 -20 years by a third party (the Constitution Party would be my guess, or even the Libertarian Party if they decide to go pro-life.)

Gravatar If Obama wins... a very smart and viable Republican candidate would formulate a 4-year plan to win the nomination and dethrone the man.

There are some very fundamental factors going haywire here. Lots of people are confused. And a clear, crisp voice getting back to basics will attract a lot of attention. Rivals will call it nonsense, but it will be the beginning of a big revolution.

God will not let evil win without a plan to turn even that to his will. After the crucifixion came the resurrection. Pick up the cross. Suffer. Enter the tomb. Rise again. But do nothing without an eye on that prize.

On another note: McCain is getting pretty desperate. He's hardly mentioned abortion, and abortion is key. Scientists are complaining about his crack about the planetarium projector, yet they're mum on Obama's inability to know elementary school biology. Whoever refuses to protect innocent life lacks the wisdom to lead and the moral authority to speak about any other issue. Who cares what Obama's position is on the economy--he's pro-abortion, therefore he's not thinking straight, and even if his position is a good one, we can wonder how he got there and why he holds it, because his mind is muddled on innocent life.

Gravatar If God allows Obama to win, it can only be a chastisement.

Gravatar Ken in Portland --

I think you might have overlooked a big swing and a miss from McCain with regard to his stance on the unjust war. And neither candidate supports a pro-life immigration policy.

The only viable choice I've found is Joe Schriner.

www.voteforjoe.com

Gravatar oh and Brian Day --

The Libertarian party favors the overturning of Roe v. Wade and opposes all laws at the federal and state level protecting the "right" to abortion. furthermore, they oppose government funding for any type of abortion.

While the official party doesn't take a stance one way or another regarding the morality of the act itself, in form they are more pro-life than many republicans and almost all democrats. Moreover, many individual Libertarians are pro-life (cf. Ron Paul, et al.)

I'm no libertarian, just thought you might like to know.

Gravatar Unfortunately, I have already heard people, who believe Obama will win, saying that the GOP isn't 'moderate' enough on all the issues.

If Obama wins, expect the GOP to continue its track record of coming to bad conclusions.

Gravatar Whatever you think about Pres. Bush, he appointed Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Alito.

The result so far have been two decisions that are beginning to chip away at the monolith of abortion rights (Gonzalez v. Carhart and Ayotte v. Planned Parenthood).

The next President will very likely replace one (Stevens) and perhaps three (Ginsburg and Souter) Justices. The souls of millions of unborn babies weep at the thought of Barack Obama having an opportunity to fill those seats.

In my book, that's reason enough to vote for Sen. McCain and to pray fervently for the defeat of Sen. Obama.

Gravatar In January, either Sen. McCain or Sen. Obama will be the President of the United States. No one else has a chance. Although McCain isn't perfect, he's the best chance we've got at keeping Obama out of the Oval Office. I'd rather see him appointing our next batch of Supreme Court Justices than Obama any day.

Gravatar Obama wants health care for everyone but newborn babies who have survived an abortion--so not health care for all, but selected people.

Gravatar billy says:
I'm no libertarian, just thought you might like to know.

Well, I AM a registered libertarian, so yes, I know. The reality is I have yet to vote libertarian because of all of the libertarian candidates available to me to vote for, none so far has been pro-life. So you can understand my pessimistic view of the party.

Gravatar it's simple: vote for obama, and then vote for a pro-life senate candidate. after all, its the senate that votes on the judges.

Gravatar richard - so *some* votes can be immoral if you weigh them against the *totality* of your good votes?

sorry, that doesn't wash. it's like saying you're going to report your income in most cases, but not that one job you do on the side. candidates should be weighed by their individual merits.

Gravatar i'm just saying that, looking and the american political system, its the senate who votes on judges and mccain is a liberal republican who will probably try to appoint liberal judges no different from obama just like the last liberal republican, so we should focus on the senate and we might as well get the benefit of the other obama policies more in line with church teaching than mccain.

Gravatar Those of you who see no difference between voting for Obama and voting for McCain astonish me.

Barack Obama is an existential threat to the United States of America. John McCain is not. Barack Obama will destroy the American Constitution as we know it and he has already attempted to squelch any criticism of him with legal intimidation:
http://michellemalkin.com/2008/0...on-free-speech/

Barack Obama has always voted against our Second Amendment rights as well, the loss of which destroys our ability to defend the First.

This is a man who no longer supports or understands our Constitution. He is a marxist who sees nothing wrong with associating with people who hate this country so much that they would bomb, maim and destroy those in it.

This is a man who consistently voted pro abortion and pro infanticide, possibly the most radically pro "culture of death" legislator in recent memory. Even Hillary doesn't have the stomach for infanticide. What kind of person does? For the love of God, what kind of Catholic can disregard the alien sensibilities of this man?

For his are the ones of a pagan!

Both candidates are imperfect, certainly.

But to equate them with each other is appallingly blind and sloppily indiscriminate.

This is no time to quibble over personal preferences. This is about fighting for Western Civilization as we know it.

Gravatar Yes, Atheling!

Gravatar We need more Athelings!

Gravatar atheling -

Free speech you say?

Just this morning I heard that a sheriff in Florida is now under federal investigation.

His crime?

He mentioned Obama's middle name.

Free speech is going the way of Obama.

Gravatar "After losing this fall, the GOP will either have another Regan Revolution"

This is, at best, naive. After Obama wins, we will be in the wilderness for at least eight years, and possibly longer -- the Democrats's filibuster proof Congress will see to it. We will have many more entitlement programs, which will never be dismantled, just as no entitlement program here, once established, has ever been. There will be no "Reagan Revolution." The US will merely become another European-style social democracy.

As for contraception, that's a lost battle. There's no point in even thinking about that, particularly when abortion is not.

Gravatar "i'm just saying that, looking and the american political system, its the senate who votes on judges and mccain is a liberal republican who will probably try to appoint liberal judges no different from obama just like the last liberal republican"

Richard, that is just untrue. Read the statements of McCain and Obama on judicial appointments: McCain wants more Alito and Roberts judges (who he voted FOR in the senate), judges more faithful to the Constitution. Obama has flat out said that he wants "living Constitution" judges who are in touch with their emotions; and Obama voted against Roberts and Alito.

On judicial appointments, there is no questions that McCain is much, much better than Obama.

Sure, we should vote for pro-life senators, because senators approve or not approve the President's nomination... but it is the President who nominates in the first place. We need someone who will make good nominations.

Gravatar There is no place to run to. The rest if world is worse.

Gravatar To all those folks commenting about how an Obama victory will stimulate and energize republicans and conservatives - please wake up from your dream!

An Obama victory will truly mean the end of our republic - such as it is.

Gravatar God help us if Obama gets in....

Gravatar ..sigh.. I am so sad at the state of affairs with both parties... I would just vote Green... for God and His glorious nature, if I could... but it would mean nothing. Shall I say, "I abstain" as a means of protest to either party? So sad... My husband is Canadian. We left the States many years ago... but I watch, and am sad... and sorry for the state of affairs. I leave you with my tender thoughts and loving prayers for Mother Angelica of EWTN, and for all souls... With Polar Bear Hugs from CANADAhhh, The "M" (mother) of The "D" (daughter) from Girl Talk "MD"

Gravatar As for contraception, that's a lost battle. There's no point in even thinking about that, particularly when abortion is not.

I say we better keep thinking about it because contraception is the key issue. Like abortion to which it is closely related, contraception is intrinsically evil, and the people using it or supporting it are guilty of mortal sin, (assuming the normal conditions apply) Since estimates range from 75-90% of Catholics using contraception and I would guess an equal number or greater of the general population we are in deep trouble. God said He would spare Sodom if there were 10 honest men there. I'm afraid that we are getting close to going below that number, statistically speaking of course.

Gravatar We need to let everyone know just how unacceptable Obama is! We also need to get out and vote for McCain. Granted, he isn't perfect, but at least he is a patriot which is more than you can say about Obama!!!

Gravatar atheling: You're right about an Obama presidency being akin to Babylon. I just found something very interesting B16 wrote (before he was B16?) about citizenship in a Babylon-type society.

http://ignatiusinsight.com/ featu...olcep_oct08.asp

It's level-headed and encouraging.

Gravatar Delle:

I hear you. Yes, Obama's thugs are using legal pressure to silence his critics, but you cannot use his tactics (and those of the left) as an example of American policy.

We still have the First Amendment, which protects speech. A person may attempt to prosecute someone for saying something, but at least the defendant has dog in that fight with the protection from the Bill of Rights.

In other countries, no such protection exists - as policy!. In Germany a person can be prosecuted for denying the Holocaust. While I question the intellectual honesty and sanity of anyone who denies such, I also believe that they do not deserve legal prosecution for expressing it.

In Canada, they have hate speech laws, and anyone who dares to criticize Muslims, for example, as Mark Steyn did, will be dragged into court for "hate speech".

So far, Americans are protected from such harassment. But an Obama presidency will certainly change that, as we see from the tactics of his campaign.

Gravatar GW:

Thank you for the link. The Holy Father, as always, hits the nail on the head. His reasoned and sobering analysis of the historical relationship between the People of God and the State should be read by all who have an interest in politics - no - by all who vote.

Gravatar Louis Farrakhan calls Obama "The Messiah":

"You are the instruments that God is going to use to bring about universal change, and that is why Barack has captured the youth. And he has involved young people in a political process that they didn't care anything about. That's a sign. When the Messiah speaks, the youth will hear, and the Messiah is absolutely speaking.

A black man with a white mother became a savior to us. A black man with a white mother could turn out to be one who can lift America from her fall.

Would God allow Barack to be president of a country that has been so racist, so evil in its treatment of Hispanics, native Americans, blacks? Would God do something like that? Yeah. Of course he would. That's to show you that the stone that the builders rejected has become the headstone of the corner. This is a sign to you. It's the time of our rise. It's the time that we should take our place. The future is all about you."

Blasphemous.

The video can be viewed here:

Gravatar I don't understand how Obama has duped so many people. Can someone help me here?

Gravatar brady:

Go to the link GW provided. Pope Benedict explains the spiritual reason why so many people have fallen for Obama.

On a more mundane level, we have:

1. An educational system that indoctrinates children, rather than educates them to think reasonably, and to appreciate the foundation of our nation. Socialism is the doctrine of the public school system.

2. People seek political answers to spiritual issues. Very dangerous, and analogous to the loss of our Christian roots.

3. The media has lost its sense of integrity, professionalism, and impartiality. Journalism is dead. The media's anointing of Obama, and its refusal to report real news, is misleading people.

Gravatar Let me harken back to the title of this article and sum it up with a Laconic response:

IF

Gravatar The Church seems to have a way of speaking about rights and duties interchangeably. But does the right to health care necessitate government rule any more than does the right to education, or to receive absolution, or have sex in marriage? Must everything climb all the way to the White House?

For crying out loud, isn't there a duty of humility to prevent us from trying to micromanage millions and hundreds of millions of lives from one central seat of power?

Gravatar Perhaps modesty or temperance, and not humility, is what I meant.

Gravatar thanks atheling

Gravatar Philip:

I agree. The call to a "right" to health care is wrong. Health care is not a right. There is nothing in our Constitution that says that the government must provide us with health care.

People who think that the government should solve all of our woes should read Hayek's The Road to Serfdom, which was written during the rise of Nazi Germany - which was a SOCIALIST party.

Gravatar if b.h.o.wins, kiss whatever freedom you now have goodbye.

Gravatar It's not a question of "if Obama wins." Obama is going to win. This means authentic pro-life voters should desert the sinking McCain ship and vote the Baldwin-Castle ticket.

In the meantime, all of this hysteria is ridiculous. This country survived Warren Harding's presidency and after 20 Jan '09 it will have survived the disastrous GWB administration that destroyed our economy and involved us in an immoral war in Iraq. Even if Obama turns out to be an utter trainwreck we will survive him as well and perhaps jettison this horrible two-party system that gave us the rotten choices of Obama/Biden vrs McCain/Palin!

Gravatar I predict the absurdity of prognostication will continue even after Nov. 4th.
