Wow. And I felt insulted when I had to get tested for STDs before entering college... This is unbelievable!
Advertising the vaccine like it's against cancer? They should get sued.

From what I've read, it sounds like the vaccine manufacturer is pushing this in as hard a sell as possible and it is all about the $$$$$.
Using cancer to scare (literally) up business, then getting the politician whose election campaign you funded to make it compulsory to use your vaccine on schoolchildren - that's corruption, methinks.

$360 per person x 365K persons per year =
$131,400,000 gross revenue from this Executive act.
And people wonder why I'd be willing to move to Italy.
And the exemption is only if you can establish that you object to vaccination on religious or philosophical principle. There is, at present, no exception for this vaccine. It's all or nothing.
Life here in Texas just got a little bit less enjoyable.

I am a family physician and wrote about the vaccine here. I think the issue here is more the mandating of the vaccine than the vaccine itself. The National Catholic Bioethics Center has reviewed the vaccine and said there are no ethical issues with giving the vaccine. However, this should be a parental rather than a state decision. Also of interest is this article illustrating the strong ties between Texas Governor Rick Perry and Merck, the manufacturer of the vaccine. Today's Washington Times also has an article warning of safety issues with the vaccine.

Catholic Mom: you are right, there is nothing wrong with the vaccine.
The questions against it is the same question you have for any new mandatory vaccine. The pros for it are the same pros you have for any new mandatory vaccine.

The vaccine does not prevent all types of HPV strains which cause cervical cancer. Regular Pap smears are still necassary and remain the best defense against cervical cancer.
Also 82 adverse reactions have been reported from using the vaccine. Also, every girl would be injected with a huge amount of aluminum. In ongoing research, the aluminum is associated with Parkinson-like tremors in mice. It made the whole research staff very jittery about vaccinations.

LvB -- many vaccinations have side effects in them, which is one of the reasons why many people think no vaccination should be mandatory.
As I said, the things one could have against this one, people can have against others which are mandatory.

How is the vaccine cultured? If it is cultured on aborted fetus lines, then we cannot take it.

Many companies mandate that employees must take hepatitis vaccine and so on, but they need to be informed of the origin of the vaccine. Many times, they relent when they know that a person cannot participate in the program because of religious reasons re the culturing method of the vaccine.
There are cell lines which are used to culture vaccines that have come from dead children. I have to opt for vaccines cultured on chickens instead.

I have to say that I feel this has become a religious moral question when it is one of health. We have finally found something to prevent cervical cancer. Thank God for that! The responsibility is ours to teach chastity to our youth. The ignorance around this vaccination is disgusting. I wanted to wait until marriage for sex. I was raped & because of the rape I had to deal with HPV & cervical cancer. I didn't have a choice with this - the choice was taken from me. If the vaccination was around when I was young I would not be dealing with this. The rape was bad enough - now I have to deal with cancer. Your daughter may not have a choice if God forbid this happens to her. Be smart & use this God Given scientific discovery. I thought I would never have to deal with this but now I do. You may think your daughter may never have to deal with this & I hope she never does but if she does, you will wish you gave her the gift of this vaccination. Stop being so ignorant

Just a voice -
I cannot imagine how much suffering you have endured, nevetheless, your suffering does not entitle you to refer to others as ignorant when it appears you have not seriously considered their objections. I do not see people objecting to the vaccine, but to the government's usurping of parental rights by mandating it. Your experience has been horrific, but it is certainly not the norm. Most girls do not and will not experience what you have experienced. We should not establish legislation for extremely rare cases.
I have five daughters, and I do not want to have to go through "proving" to the government why I do not choose to have this administered to them at the age of nine.
The parental rights issue is real. I chose not to have my children vaccinated against rubella and chickenpox because those vaccines are produced from aborted fetal tissue and an angered Catholic school nurse who disagreed with me had my children removed from school. She said my children were a danger to the population. If so, the vaccines the others received don't work. We had to go on to establish why we had the right to refuse the vaccines. Having sufficiently inconvenienced my husband and I and our children, I guess the danger ended. At least it provided a teaching moment to my kids.

justavoice - thanks for your comment. I'm very happy this vaccine exists. The only questions concern a) forcing all girls to take it - before we know what kind of possible long-term side effects there might be, etc, and b) it being improperly marketed as a cure for cancer, when it is not.
You are in my prayers.

But this vaccine does not prevent all HPV strains which cause cervical cancer. Even if the vaccine imparts some years of immunity to certain strains of HPV, it still would be poossible to be infected with one of the HPV strains which is not covered by this vaccination and voila, a regular pap smear is still the best prevention for cervical cancer! So a very expensive and possibly damgerous vaccine is being forced on young girls and it still won't prevent all cases of cervical cancer from HPV!
