Gravatar "In the movie business, one of the top times to unveil a film is Thanksgiving because of the large number of moviegoers during the holiday weekend."

I have always thought that the popularity of movie-going at Thanksgiving and Christmas was an incredible statement on the decrepit state of the American Family.

These great American holidays, one a Holy Day also, are touted by Madison Avenue as being tremendous family festivals.

But when happens as soon as the eating is over? Millions split for movie theaters, concert halls and other entertainment venues, apparently so they don't have to speak to their friends and relatives.

While the state of my past and present relationships with relatives isn't always perfect I can in comfort state that in the course of my considerable lifetime, only one time in the course of a "holiday weekend" have I attended a movie or an entertainment event design to take me from my relatives.

And I note with satisfaction that the children still were and are still seen around the house after the meals, often listening to us old folks talking about things about which they have only read in history books.

If you must know about that "one time", once a friend of my brothers dragged us off to see a talk by Rush Limbaugh using free tickets he talked out of a radio station. This was basically a rehash of his radio shtick attended by men who thought their taxes were too high.

Gravatar I agree with Ray (except his implication that Thanksgiving was once a holy day) that holiday activities are a reflection on the family. A roommate of mine back in school who hailed from a strong Catholic family couldn't understand, as we worked in a movie theater, why or that Christmas was the busiest day of the year. He was just used to spending time with his family and all!

It's nice to see Bella casting a wider net, though. Not so much for the pro-life message (though I certainly don't mind that) as for having a piece of Catholic culture on the big-screen. My girlfriend called it 'the kind of movie my friends would make if they made a movie', and while I enjoy a big over-produced action flick as much as the next guy, this was a refreshing change. If you liked this one, hold out for 'The Sensation of Sight'!
