Gravatar Why does this remind me of a Hillary rally?

Gravatar thanks for the link. more fun from st. Louis soon, i think. stay tuned.

Gravatar Wow, lots of Togas...

;-p

Gravatar We are blessed to be in the Archdiocese of St Louis under the care of Archbishop Burke :-)

Gravatar Honestly, what did they think would happen? We all knew how this would end the minute they announced the pretend-ordination would take place in Abp. Burke's diocese.

Gravatar Good for you, Archbishop Burke! When are those women going to understand that they can't be priests? After all, being priests is a "guy thing"!

Gravatar Let's hear it for ArchBishop Burke! Let's get a groundswell of support going for this kind of courage in support of our Ark, the Church!

I hope and pray that when tested, our Archbishop would take a stand for his faith also!

Gravatar Thomas, this is not a duplicate-- two more excommunications in st. louis today!

Gravatar I do not know what bearing this has on Canonical Law, but there are at least two passages from Scripture which point to women with authority in the Pauline churches.

Romans 16.1. Phoibe is described as "ousan diakonon" - being a deacon. She also probably bore the letter on behalf of Paul for this the most important of his missions.

1 Corinthians 16.19. Akulas and his wife Priska host a church in their own house. I think that the use of both his and her names indicates that she was an important member of the church. This at least opens the possibility that she held some kidn of ecclesiastical status.

With prayer and humility hopefully these persons can be reconciled to the Church.

Gravatar I prefer to call them 'priestesses'... it has that nice pagan ring to it.

Gravatar Good for you, Archbishop Burke! That's what I call a "Shepherd with Spine!! WOO HOO!

Has anyone ever noticed how old these 'priestesses' are? Never see a young one in the bunch!

Gravatar I wonder if any of these female priests that have been ordained for the first 1200 years have NAMES.

Gravatar I think the discussion about this matter should be framed in terms of helping these persons reunite with the Church instead of insulting them by calling them pagans. I'm pretty sure that they are in pursuit of a Christian God, even if they have strayed from the Roman Catholic Church. At any rate, it should not be about making fun of these people (indeed such mocking can only serve to sever them more from the community in a way that they would not seek to rejoin).

Second, I did provide some textual evidence of women invested with temporal, if not spiritual, power in Paul's churches. And, although this is an argument ex silentio, Paul's letters, and other Scripture, went through a significant amount of redaction and interpolation. Therefore it's possible that documents pertaining to women priests could have been destroyed or changed by redactors who frowned upon women in positions of power.

Third, keep in mind that I am not the defense team for the persons in question. I just want to frame the discussion in terms of helping them, not insulting them, and problematizing our views of Church history in order that there is a healthy and scholarly debate about what was going on in the early Church.

Gravatar You do have a point sir, that we should seek to reconcile all heretics to the Church, because Jesus, Himself said that He desired all men to come to a saving Knowledge of God.

I think that the angst expressed here comes from a frustration with the heterodox Leadership in the American Church, that is not willing to stand up for the truth. But rather seems to want to win popularity contests.

They do deserve our pity also, becuase the shepherds who lead the people of God astray will be judged the most harshly on the Great and terrible day of the Lord.
