Contraception, sterilization and abortion explains the how but not the why. Why are people choosing to not have children? Why are they choosing to get rid of them when they do have them? As goes the family so goes the country. I wonder of Russia is also having a marriage crisis as we are having here in western countries like America and England. Part of the reason is general hedonism and selfishness. But I think it goes much deeper than that. Marriage is a very bad gamble for men with half ending in divorce and those divorces being initiated by the woman more than 3/4 of the time. And when the divorce comes men almost always loose their children. If they are lucky they get to visit them twice a month. Regardless of how it turns out they still have to support them and her but with no benefits of family or marriage.
Ultimately the purpose of marriage for men is to have a family. Men cannot have kids without a woman. Women on the other hand can have kids but it is dicey. What she needs is a stable, safe place to have kids. That is the exchange. He provides for them all and she has only his kids and shares the raising of them. He now has heirs so now he has a reason to produce. What is happening now is that she gets the support and in most states and countries, the continuation of that support is guaranteed to her by law but she is not obligated to continue to her portion of the barging. He can be dismissed from the family at her whim. (and the kids are in fact her's.) He has no power to keep this from happening. And she has no incentive from society to not do this. The law of the land is no recourse for him. His only hope is that she will simply choose to honor her promise for religious reasons. Consequently the only demographics in the US still growing are conservative Christians and immigrants. This may be fine news for Christians but not fine for a culture that is generally secular. Liberalism is selecting against itself, so to speak. Even so, the news is not all good for Christians. Christian men are coming to realize that non or nominally Christian women are figuring out where the last place is to find marrying men. A lot of otherwise trusting men are either getting blindsided or seeing a frightening number of their friends get it. A lot of protestant church singles groups (I haven't been in Catholicism long enough to know what is going on there) have become little more than a match making meat market. The late twenties and thirties groups usually consist of just 20% men of whom, almost all, have never been married and 80% women who, almost all, are either divorced or are single moms, usually both and many divorced more than once. These women, generally, are not the women that these guys should or deserve to settle for but in charity they assume that the ladies have pure intentions even if they have not so pure a past. Sometimes they do have true and good intentions and things work out. Sometimes the intentions are good but the expectatio

Actually, to clarify, "Contraception, sterilization and abortion" DO explain the WHY of the question "Why is the Russian population falling." The separate WHY of contraception, sterilization and abortion is a different question I did not choose to address in this post.

Wonder if a country with a much larger population will decide to settle some of this underpopulated territory...

It's bearing it quite well, too.
Ever spent some time outside a city? Canada? It's desolate. Even the UN admits most the world faces the problem of UNderpopulation.
