Gravatar AmP: "And yes, he's having a happy father's day."

Indeed I am, especially when I got a really cool mug featuring the Egyptian hieroglyph alphabet as a present from Guess Who.

Gravatar Love the site. I haven't yet gotten my father's day gift because my seven year old put it in the safest place she could think of. ANd now she can't remember where that was exactly. She doesn't seem in any rush to find it either. She enjoyed the Father's Day Cake though.

Gravatar Meade is a disgrace

The World...IMHO

Gravatar I'm sorry to have to say, I think your father's thinking on this was very weak. The Meade's are a lovely couple, faithful to the Church. Your father correctly quotes Canon 1055 that marriage is a "covenant by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life". The institution of civil marriage in Massachusetts does not conform to this canon either before or after the gay marriage ruling as Massachusetts, which has legalized divorce, did not and does not recognize marriage as a partnership of the whole of life.

Cardinal Sean has every right to reach a prudential judgment that one civil institution not conforming to the Church's understanding of marriage (i.e. dissoluble marriages) is preferable to a greater non-conforming civil arrangement.

But given that we are not dealing with preserving an arrangement that conforms to the Catholic understanding of marriage but a civil arrangement that did not so conform, faithful Catholics might reasonably disagree as to the social impact of a further deviation.

The Meade's are decent people, and Cardinal Sean, in his decency, has chosen to reject the advice of those calling for Mr. Meade's dismissal. God bless him and God bless the Meade’s
