Gravatar Personally I don't think the Third Secret referred to Pope John Paul's assassination attempt and neither do a lot of other Catholics. To me, it doesn't make sense.

From a Washington Post article:

On Thursday, the Vatican issued a slightly edited transcript that dropped the word "yes" in the pope's response. Several other changes made his remarks seem a more general statement, rather than referring specifically to Mexican bishops who had said the politicians had excommunicated themselves.

Benedict's spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, told reporters that such edits are common. "Every time the pope speaks off the cuff, the Secretariat of State [Cardinal Bertone] reviews and cleans up his remarks," he said.

This changing of transcripts bothers me and many other Catholics. First of all, it is literally "bearing false witness" a direct violation of the Commandment. Second, a natural question is: What is keeping the Secretariat of State Bertone, from altering anyone else's comments, including Sister Lucia's, if he is in the habit of altering the pope's comments to fit his reality?

From "Fatima Secrets Fully Disclosed, Cardinal Bertone Insists"

Then-Archbishop Bertone, who was the secretary of the Congregation, announced in December 2001 that he had met with Sister Lucia, the cloistered Carmelite nun who was the sole surviving Fatima seer, and she had confirmed that "with absolute clarity and precision" that the full secret had been disclosed.

I don't have trust in Cardinal Bertone.
