Leftist governments have traditionally actively sought anti-Catholic policies in Latin America.

This is because in the early years of exploration, the Church was very adamant about the inalienable rights of the native population and insisted Spanish explorers respect their human rights and liaise with their established governments as equal in authority.

It became a matter of expedience to repress both the Catholic missionaries and the indigenous peoples in order to take their land wholesale.

Anything is permissible so long as you do it in the name of defying Holy Mother Church.
