I agree that Fr. Martin has been treated too leniently. I applaud Abp. O'Brien's actions.

...and there may be other benefits.
It remains the case that "executing" one dissident puts the fear of God into others...

We need to pray for Bishops like Abp O'Brien and Abp. Burke and all the others that are standing against the tide of the times. They will be attacked, both spiritually and politically for simply doing their jobs. I love these guys.

I have no doubt that this fellow had been warned. There are probably letters on record, phone calls, a meeting.
And the guy just ignored it all.
Well....we'll see.
Celibitarian is right - this next week is going to be a Showdown in the USCCB Corrall. I blanched when I saw tht Trautmann is on the nominee list for next chairman-elect

I love Archbishop O'Brien, hes a wonderful man and I have had the opportunity to meet him several times (as I am a seminarian at St. Mary's in Baltimore). He is a strong leader and a compassionate man yet he is all about tough love when he needs to be. He makes a point to know his diocese, spending the weeks after his ordination visiting dozens of parishes and both of his two seminaries frequently. He is an example for Bishops and priests everywhere. I would not be surprised if we see more of this in the future, I hope that this example will inspire other dissident priests in the Archdiocese (of which there is no shortage) to be obedient.

Per Phil's comment above, how far south does the archdiocese of Baltimore extend? This may only involve a 10 minute drive . . .

Anyone who saw Archbishop at his Installation Mass, after the Sanctus, when he asked the Assembly, "Please kneel," should not be surprised.
Nor shoud anyone be surprised when an Admiral of the United States Navy takes charge, he does in fact run a "tight ship."

Could anybody fill us in on what, exactly, were the "repeated administrative and liturgical offenses Martin had committed in more than a year"? What were they, exactly? Clown Masses? Improper matter for the Eucharist? Neon chausubles? Inquiring minds want to know.

Abp. O'Brien is an old paratrooper, with combat tours in "nam with the 82d and 173d Abn.
I don't think his mindset is going to be up for much BS from the troops.

I, too, would like a link to the original article and additional detail on the referenced offenses.
Thank you!

The "original article" IS the Baltimore Sun's coverage. They have an exclusive report and mention some of the priest's priors. I don't know of any other unique sources, but if I come across any I'll post them.

I don't believe that directive is in the rubrics. We don't need clergy to tell us what to do at liturgy.
