Yes, of course people first. However, if we ruin the planet, people won't long survive.
As an aside, the Vatican is the first carbon-neutral state in the world. Something for us to shoot for as well.

Look at it this way, Bill. If we all lived according to what the pope was talking about....freedom, but ONLY with responsibility...how many world problems could we solve?? Many I am sure.

The left-wing loons are decimated. WHat did they expect? THe Pope to convert to the Church of the Global Warming? He wouldn't that because it's too dogmatic and brooks no dissent from its "orthodoxy." Tom

I hate to throw cold water here, but I was disappointed in the speech to the U.N. There was no mention at all of the role of U.N. agencies in promoting babykilling and contraception. And it could have been done quite seamlessly -- e.g., "for the Universal Declaration of human rights to have any meaning, it must be seen as also protecting the unborn, the handicapped ... etc."

This 'carbon-neutral' designation is again an example of un-truth. Obviously, the Vatican employees and their activities which may involve various forms of transportation and of heating and cooling are continuing to produce CO2.
The solar cells were donated, right? Who wouldn't like some cheap energy? Also, Germans love forests. It is apart of their culture to walk through woods. And their is nothing wrong with planting forests. But to say that the Vatican is thereby subscribing to the global warming scare is really not proven by the above actions.
Bendict comes telling us to have hope in Christ, not in a forcible reduction of CO2 output!
