Gravatar And finally, why isn't the answer to all these questions "because Obama's platform is less acceptable to Catholics than McCain's platform, and Obama's people know it."?

Because most of them have drunk the Kool Aid, and don't want to admit that their candidate is anything less than the 2nd Coming, so they choose to ignore it...

(I say this as a sister of one who's so far in the clouds, she's impossible to talk to, but she's completely unable to tell me why he's so great other than "change" and "hope")

Gravatar Fascinating. Go NT.

Gravatar I don't think either one of them is exactly what you would call an ideal candidate... but Obama's failure to lift one of his oh-so-precious fingers to even make an attempt at reaching out for more Catholic votes could be for any number of reasons. I think it's either because
a) he knows he will fail... unless he changes his status on abortion, which he won't, most Catholics won't even consider him
or
b)he's cocky and doesn't think he needs our vote, which is probably true as far as statistics go.

Gravatar

why do Obama's defenders rarely, if ever, consent to debating their candidate's positions in a free public forum?

Well, you may not have noticed, but Sen. Obama has engaged in quite a bit of open forum debating . . .

It's just that the person he's debating is . . . Sen. Obama!

He's had a fairly vigorous debate with himself on:

-Whether Iran is a security threat;

-Whether to "stand by" Rev. Wright;

-Whether we should withdraw from Iraq on "day one" or stay there until it's secure;

-Whether to accept public campaign financing in the general election;

-Whether there should be a "mental health" exception for partial birth abortions;

-Whether the D.C. gun law at issue in Heller was constitutional;

-Whether the death penalty should be imposed for non-homicide crimes;

-Telecom immunity in the updated FISA;

and so on, and so on, and so on . . .

What?

That's not enough debate for you???

Gravatar Your blog is so refreshing after reading some of the pro-Obama (explicit or implicit) posts on Vox Nova. I wonder if they'll stop by and answer any of your questions?

Gravatar Obama 2008 bitches!

Gravatar Obama 2008 bitches!

Sadly, one of the more coherent responses from that camp.

Gravatar As a minor, I fear Obama's persuasive manner of speech, comparable to Hitler's. I find his "change" lacking any substance. Hopefully I'll be accepted to a foreign university so I can avoid the havoc he will make if he is elected. I agree that neither is an ideal candidate, but we must choose one. Hopefully the minor party candidates will help to keep the white house in the right.

Gravatar McCain desperately needs the Catholic vote. Many think that key states like Ohio, Michigan, and maybe Pennsylvania will be decided by the working class Catholics and women.

Gravatar Scott W.:

I laughed out loud at your response!

Gravatar What egotism. Kresta, a conservative talk show host on Tom Monohan's controversial organization issues an edict to appear on his show.

This is like when Bill Donohue had one of his interns call the Obama campaign to ask if Donohue's demands that Obama dissolve his Catholic Advisory Committee had been met. When the Obama campaign had the good sense to not bother returning the call, Donohue said the Committee must be dissolved because they didn't call him back!1 (btw, it meets every week).

And I used to think Rush Limbaigh's ego was big enough to fill the field!

Gravatar K, you're just ranting now.

Gravatar -(btw, it meets every week)

So, Obama's CAC meets more often than it's target audience of lapsed, INO, Catholics attend Mass? How appropriate!

Gravatar Perhaps Al Kresta should ask Doug Kmiec on his show. That should be interesting.
