Honestly, I get chills (the good kind!) and teary-eyed when I think of the Pope standing at Ground Zero. If I may prescind, for a moment, from the horrific means by which Ground Zero came to be, and focus instead on a Christian theological reality:
Here thousands of people ended their earthly existence - so many of them never to be found, or even identified. Quite literally, "to dust they were returned."** Thousands more people mourn their loss, and seek comfort in the place where their loved ones breathed their last.
How amazing, how beautiful, how awesome, then, to have Pope Benedict, the VICAR OF CHRIST, be present at that holy, yet haunted* place??
And, lest I be misunderstood,
* I mean a place of emotional affliction or disquiet, not one "haunted by ghosts"
** I do not mean to be crude or disrespectful in this post, in fact just the opposite. I was, and am, truly overwhelmed by the truth of this biblical promise, especially as played out on 9/11. Thus, to have the Vicar of Christ stand upon that same ground...frankly, it brings me to my knees.
