Obama said he did not want to overwhelm a church with his presence. What could be a better Sunday plate collection than him attending?
He has an excuse for everything. And once again, it is all about him.

Oh please, TP! This is certainly not unique to President Elect Obama. Our current President has not attended church regularly in the last 8 years, in fact choosing only to attend occasionally at St. John's, the "church of the Presidents."

Actually, according to am interview in Parents magazine, the Obamas don't regularly attend church--they only go if they can all go together, and they don't send their daughters to Sunday school because it cuts into family time on the weekends. I would think that working out does the same, though. Anyway, I just wanted to point out that this is not new for Obama. He also said in the interview something to the effect that Sunday school is unnecessary because they teach their daughters their values at home. Not unusual, but I think it points to Obama's distance from traditions, faith or otherwise,a nd his embrace of individualism.

Ronald Reagan never went to church while president either. He said it was about not disrupting a church.
For Protestants though what is the real impetus of going to church that they wouldn't get from watching some broadcast on tv other than fellowship?

This is not surprising. If I recall correctly, John McCain couldn't remember the church he and his wife attended and he said they certainly weren't "regular" churchgoers.

Like Jeff Miller, I remember the particular excuse being given as the same one given by or for President Reagan.
However, as many people, myself included, slowly came to realize, Ronald Reagan had a flame of faith inside him that a lot of church-going Christians lack. I don't yet see anything similar in our President-elect, and that's all the more reason to pray for him.

I did see a story today in the Chicago Sun-Times where Obama and his large retinue went to Manny's Deli here in chicago to pick up some corned beef sandwiches. I guess they didn't worry about the effect that would have on the people in the deli. Priorities.

Oh, for gosh sakes, lil whey. I was making the point that he has time to go to the deli but not time to go to church. It had NOTHING to do with the deli being a sacred space or not.

Golly gee, kathy, he never claimed he didn't have the time to go to church.
His point was that his retinue would create difficulties and divert from the purpose of going to church in the first place. Then you compared going to church with going to a deli. A joke, you claim.
My guess is that you would have been one of the first people to accuse him of merely making a spectacle of himself by attending a church, detracting from the sacredness of the service itself.

I've been reading Ronald Reagan's diaries and in several places he complains about not being able to go to church because of security issues.
When Nixon was president, he had services in the White House. Of course the Usual Suspects howled about the separation of church and state.
You can't win.
As for me, the tingling sensation in my leg tells me that church attendence is not all that important to Obama. Didn't he go to Trinity more for political/social reasons than spiritual ones?

Obama knows that most people are sick of pious presidents, who are also murderers and torturers.
That's the best one yet. So, Obama, like Lenin and Stalin, opt to murder and torture without appearing pious. I can see why you like him so much.
To put it another way, what you are saying is, "I'd rather have an apparent athiest murderer and torturer who displays no piety at all than a murderer and torturer that attends church (where he may hear something that changes his mind on his behavior)".
Ah, American Catholicism today.

Oh Kathy, you're very wrong. I am very happy and laugh quite a lot.
But I think there are all kinds of jokes. Some are made at the expense of others without much or any basis in fact and these tend to be snide and snarky. And I don't think they are funny.
