I heard that the director wanted to frame God as the villain of the story. Which might work...

I find your conclusion ("a brazen ability to destroy the achievements of the past") needlessly acerbic. Why not wait and see, especially given the dearth of reliable information you have?

did you read the linked article?
I admit my language was a bit extreme, but I'm thinking here about the long list of hollywood remakes of classic tales that have completely destroyed the original beauty(think "Troy", etc).

From his awful piece:
Even their father, Lord Marchmain, the arch-iconoclast, eventually comes home to die. On his deathbed, he re-affirms his faith. Once a Catholic, always a Catholic.
And he appears to think that this is bad. Say not! A Catholic repenting of sins! Inconceivable!!!

Lissa,
Yes. One of my faves.
AP: I agree...Hollywood does murder classics, but in rare instances, I think the visual arts can bring new beauty to older works. At the very least, it introduces the works to a larger audience. I guess I'm just more of a "hope springs eternal" kind of girl. Thanks for the link.

I just watched the trailer and I kept asking myself, "Is this even the same story?!?" I don't see how those scene mesh with the book at all. They make Charles look so powerful and emotional when in the BBC version he was quite subdued even when he was upset. Regardless, the fact that the screen writer said he made God out to be the enemy is enough to know they changed the story. It is clear from the real story that God is only one making anyone happy at all and they characters only find peace when they return to the Faith. But what can you expect from Hollywood...
Pax Christi tecum.
