The simplest explanation for the liberals' objections for me is that, well, it's all about the free sex.
You make a very good point when you cite a lack of understanding of true human nature as one of the underlying factors. For far too long there has been the idea that the human body is only a tool for achieving desires rather than an integral part of one's identity and personhood. It is this warped perception of the human self, the notion that 'dignity' is equivalent to 'comfortable' life, that is the cause of so much of the moral failings of today (abortion, euthanasia, etc).
But that's just my ignorant opinion.
Juan is correct. This isn't about public heath so much as it is about keeping the free-love house of cards standing. It's a continuum: fornication, abortion, contraception, no-fault divorce, gay marriage, etc., and it is necessary for the older generations to keep initiating the younger generations if they mean to protect their own stake in the matter.
