I don't know the area around Catholic U that well, unfortunately. I would mention that there's a really cool icon store pretty close. It's over on Quincy St. (walking distance). As far as eating elsewhere in the city, if you want fine dining ($$$) a place near 12th and Pennsylvania called Fago de Chao is the best food I've had in the city. For less expensive, delicious cuisine, I can only recommend that you check out the numerous Ethiopian places throughout town. D.C. has the largest Ethiopian population outside of Ethiopia (I'm almost certain this is correct) and thus we benefit from their influx. For watering holes (if you're so inclined) many recommend Adams Morgan. I highly disagree because the "drinking culture" is so prominent and it's on the expensive side. I prefer some of the bars in Dupont (which is still not cheap). I'm still in search of good dive bars though I have some real candidates out in Arlington. I'd love to grab a pint sometime.

There is Col. Brooks Tavern right down the road. Ellis Island is a nice little Irish pub sort of place a in Brookland that is pretty good. They have happy hours and college nights with some pretty good deals.

Both are within walking distance of the DHS. Though I wouldn't reccomend walking alone after dark in Brookland.

Might I suggest The Dubliner right across from Union Station? Good food and pub atmosphere.

Congrats on the job, Thomas! That's great news.
The Olde Ebbitt Grille has been a favorite of mine, but it's a little swanky. I know I can't afford it anymore. :)

After Col. Brooks and the 12th Street strip, there really isn't much else in the CUA area.
But the Irish Times and Dubliner next door are always popular CUA hang-outs. Of course, part of the fun of moving to a new place is just hopping on the Metro or bus and getting off to explore the areas around the stops.
