Ahh, good old American ingenuity... This is why I am sometimes ashamed to be an American. Not every innovation has its place, some ideas are just bad.

Cel - Just because the U.S. has some cultural tendencies to wrong-headed applications of "efficiency" is no reason to be ashamed of the country whose industry and contributions support Catholic organizations around the world. A little context goes a long way on these things.

I seem to remember a big mass for the sick a while ago where a tent was set up outside in order that the sacrament of anointing could be administered to the non-ambulatory in their cars in a drive-thru fashion.

Also, this makes me sad because I love drive-ins and hate to hear stories about "former drive-in movies."
The best things about drive-in movies: Eat your own food, make as much noise as you want, smoke, . . . now all applied to church!

What about "toot & tell" confessionals?

Actually, I've been to a mass like this - but they were extrordinary circumstances. Our church was being renovated and the school gym where we were supposed to have mass was not unlocked, so we had to do this in the parking lot. A lot of the older folks chose to sit in their cars, and when communion time came you heard the "don't forget your car key" alarm sound and the sound of car doors slamming as people got out to join the communion line. At least we didn't do drive through!

This is exactly how Robert Schuller started the Crystal Cathedral. It was far more innovative an idea at the time...
