Red hat with fifteen tassels for Abp. Burke would be really great, and it's not that unlikely either.

Though I add, "South" has nothing to do with this topic. Today's Rome does not really understand North/South in American history. It likely does not understand East/West, either, or where the line is drawn. The much more important demarcation is, of course, Coast/Interior. That said, I need hardly add, Abp. Burke would make a superb cardinal, precisely because that's the kind of man we need casting a vote on B16's successor. As long as I'm at it, a very important factor to watch will be the ratio of Italians to Americans. If Italians equal (let alone exceed) the number of Americans, it is "business as usual". But if Americans outnumber Italians, for once, it will be taken as more evidence of the recognition that the future of the Church lies, for the foreseeable future..., well, let's just say, outside of Europe.

I know it's not likely, but I would seriously love to see Archbishop Chaput as a prince of the Church. (He is an archbishop now, isn't he?)

Sorry to post twice in a row--but would he be our first native american cardinal? (OK, partly native american--whatever.)

Abp Chaput would be fine, of course. As would one other besides Abp. Burke. All for the same reasons. BUt hey, we can dream, can't we?

Would not there be a possibility of this being in Texas

Abp Wuerl? He doesn't even have the courage to confront Nanci Pelosi. That old coward. He needs more courage. Honestly. If it's Wilton Gregory that's getting a cardinal's hat, I would faint, given his shameful performance during the sex abuse scandal.

Nick,I'm with you....I would love to see Archbishops Burke or Chaput get the red hat.In Texas, you have Archbishop Gomez about whom I hear many good things. He too would be worthy.

Abp. Gomez is Opus Dei, I can just hear the secular press now if he were to get a red hat...Needless to say, I am all for it!

If we could vote, Archbishops Burke and Chaput would get mine. Archbishop Wuerl discredited himself during the Nancy Peloosi affair. We don't need another "go along to get along" Cardinal. I fear Wilton Gregory might fit that mold as well. I hope I'm wrong. Tom

TJM,
I think that maybe we could help the Pope elect the real orthodox cardinals and restore order to the Church.

Nick......again you are correct. This would be true "lay participation" in the Church.

Is it expected that former Boston auxiliary, now-Archbishop Roberto Gonzalez will be elevated at some point?

Clearly this topic always generates a good deal of interest. I'll keep a closer watch on the buzz.

I'd like to see Archbishop Burke and Bishop Bruskewitz(did I spell that right?) as cardinals.

Of course, it wouldn't hurt to have my own bishop, Bishop Kmiec, as a cardinal, although I admit that's rather unlikely.

Hi,
as Pope Benedict told in the 2006 consistory, that he will return to the legal limit of max.120 cardinal-electors, and until June he therefore "only" could create 15 cardinals under 80 years, itīs very difficult to create two US-Cardinals. There are many archbishops around the world, who are waiting for the red hat. Here my personal list for the next consistory?
1. Lajolo, Giovanni (curia)
2. Rylko, Stanislaw (curia)
3. Comastri, Angelo (curia)
4. Coccoplamerio, Francesco (curia)
5. Wuerl
6. Cuquejo Verga, Eustaquio (Asuncion)
7. Vingt-Trois, Andre (Paris)
8. Bagnasco, Angelo (Genova)
9. Romeo, Paolo (Palermo)
10. Kazimierz Nycz (Warszawa)
11. Scherer, Odilo (Sao Paulo)
12. Braz de Aviz, Joao (Brasilia)
13. Souraphiel, Berhane-Yesus (Addis Abeba)
14. Ndingi Mwana'a Nzeki, Raphael (Nairobi)
15. I have two names for the last hat: Sirkar from Calcutta/India or Ncube from Bulawayo/Zimbabwe
My favorites for the cardinals over 80 years:
16. De Magistris, Luigi (curia)
17. Duprey, Pierre (curia)
18. Capovilla, Loris (former secretary of B.Pope John XXIII.
19. Laurentin, Rene (theologian)
20. maybe one of the old bishops in china
We will see. Greetings, Drehsen
