Gravatar That is the correct decision, and it shows the wisdom of Archbishop Burke's resignation about the Sheryl Crow invitation. The Church cannot send confusing signals, especially to young people, such as inviting a pro-abortion, pro-embryonic stem cell research politician to speak at a Catholic school. She is causing great scandal.

Gravatar The real colors of the pro-abortionists are showing. More from those who claim to claim to be 'inclusive.' God bless Archbishop Burke, he brings a tear to my eye. At least for us traditionalists.

Gravatar Liberal hypocrites. They would be screaming bloody murder if Charleton Heston were invited to host the GLADD awards. Geeezzz...

Fr. Philip, OP

Gravatar Sounds like the "good" Sister in charge of the school ought to be canned. In her mind, apparently, feminism trumps Catholicism. Congratulations Archbishop Burke! Tom

Gravatar No countdown for the Pope's visit to Brazil in a week?

Gravatar easy, easy. My fingers only move so fast!

Gravatar Along these lines, I highly recommend David Carlin's recent book "Can a Catholic be a Democrat?: How the party I loved became the enemy of my Religion."

Carlin is a former Democrat Leader of the R.I. State Senate.

It's a pretty solid explanation of the current sad state of the Democrat Party as it relates to moral issues.

Gravatar Preach, papist brotha! Preach!!

Gravatar Despite what you may think, the school headmistress did have a difficult decision. Her school is private, not a Church school. This means they get all their income from the parents of these children. Being able to play it politically neutral could mean big financial gain from OJ-Simpson-type rich Catholics who buy their Catholicism (just like OJ bough his freedom -- okay go ahead and say it "bad comparison").

Having access to these these privileged children would allow the school to counter-indoctrinate the next generation of power and wealth.

Think about it. If the school became known for its principles, how many rich and powerful pseudo-Catholics would send their children there? "You mean your holiness is not for sale? Come along, Bridgette!"

Sound too far-fetched? I think this is a situation with "quite high probability." After all, when in Mordor ...

This of course may not be the case, but the whole situation is too hermetically sealed in terms of politics. I too think Archbishop Burke's disavowal is a little fishy.

Could it be that Sister Zahner was in fact the one who gave the evil, holocaust-supporting McCaskill the boot? Maybe she was convinced at the last minute by a fellow teacher.

I heard sometimes Catholic school teachers are actually Catholic.

Just some thoughts.

Gravatar Tom Dickison, you just don't get it. If you're for the minimum wage, fight like hell to keep mass murderer's from receiving the death penalty, and oppose war for any reason, then you're just fine from a moral perspective in Demoland. Abortion is merely "one issue" in the seamless garment of life issues. Tom

ps thanks for the tip on the book!

Gravatar I'm not Catholic, in fact I think organized religion is among the world's greatest problems right now, but your Senator is there to represent all of the people, not just those of you who believe Catholic dogma. Disinviting the Senator from speaking at her own daughter's graduation is rude, foul and makes a mockery of what Jesus had to say, but then so does most of the behavior these days of so-called "religious" people. The good news is that I'm sure the students see exactly what is happening and are disgusted. Believe me, the church is sending quite a "message." a message of intolerance. The posts on this site are nasty, ugly and certainly make me proud to be an agnostic. And when stem cell research does benefit mankind, make sure those of you opposed don't take advantage of what science offers. However, I'm sure you'll be the first to line up when your life is in peril.

Gravatar Sorry Michael, but you've demonstrated a fair amount of ignorance with your comments and I'm sure you're open to having those misconceptions righted.

First, the Church isn't against stem cell research per se. It's against EMBRYONIC stem cell research, which to date has absolutely *no* cures to its credit. Adult stem cell research, on the other hand, has yielded actual results, and Catholics are perfectly able to morally avail themselves of those cures.

Graduation speakers are invited because they are people worthy of imitation and capable of teaching graduates good lessons in life. A pro-abortion advocate is niether of those things, especially to young women. Should the Church, or a Catholic school, "tolerate" people who promote lifestyles and decisions that harm young women and kill infants? Of course not. You wouldn't tolerate someone like that. That's why she's been disinvited. If she were to change her public stance on these sorts of issues she would be readily welcomed back.

Hope this helps. Thanks for reading and commenting.

Gravatar The comment American Papist just posted was polite, peaceful, and KIND. Makes me proud to be Catholic.
