Bransfield had lots of national conenctions given his previous rectorship of the National Shrine.

However, since he was just elevated as a bishop in the past 3 or 4 years, perhaps some felt that it is too soon for a chair position?

Nevertheless, the fact that he was nominated and earned so many votes points to his brother bishops' appreciation of his work and probably signals that he'll get a bump up in the coming years.

Gravatar I don't understand Archbishop Zavala as Communications Chair. Does this sound like clear and effective communication to you:

"What I believe, and what the church teaches, is that one abortion is too many. That's why I believe abortion is so important. But in light of this, there are many other issues we need to bring up, other issues we should consider, other issues that touch the reality of our lives."

That sounds like speaking out of both sides of ones mouth so everyone hears what they want to hear and nothing ever changes.

Gravatar Cardinal DiNardo is an excellent leader and very energetic. He has things moving along here in the Archdiocese.

Gravatar Houston, I'd be interested in learning what Cardinal DiNardo is moving along. Was wondering, in particular, if he has written anything in regard to Catolic pro-abortion politicians. When he was here in Iowa, he seemed reluctant to challenge the secular status quo of society in any significant manner. Thanks much.

Gravatar 1. Agreed on Bransfield. I was a student at CUA when he was the Shrine rector. Very practical, and can shake the money tree like nobody's business. Hand in glove.

2. Wuerl is very sound on catechesis (at least in writing--his homilies tend toward the relativistic). He's a bit of a squish on coming down on pols, but better than McCarrick.

However, he is a tyrant on liturgy. He has effectively-vetoed the implementation of S.P. in Washington. I therefore cannot applaud his being elevated in any way.

Gravatar He first commented about the USCCB guide. Then he summed it up with this.

This does not speak directly to Catholic politicians rather to Catholics in general. Of course, we don't have many milquetoast Catholic politicians in Texas. We tend to vote them out of office so the Bishops do not have to deal with them.

He has had many tough financial decisions to make and is not hesitant to call a problem a problem and deal with it. Enrollment in educational programs in the Archdiocese is up. Donations are also up. He has been very up front in leading the recovery of Huricane Ike. Galveston was devastated.

Gravatar I have nothing against the new Cardinal Dinardo, but he doesn't seem to have shaken anything up since arriving, at least in matters of liturgy and practice. He seems to have a good character and mean well, but I wish he would speak a little more plainly.
